Description

GEORGE CLAUSING, OF PORTSMOUTH, OHIO, ASSIGNOR TO THE VULCAN'LAST COM- PANY, OF PORTSMOUTH, OHIO, A CORPORATION OF OHIO.
LAST.
mane.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Oct. 9, 191?.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, GEORGE CLAUSING, a citizen of the United States, residing in the city of Portsmouth, in the county of Scioto and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Lasts, Case K,'of which the following is a specification.
One of the objects of the invention is to produce a simple, strong and practical last which can be broken or flexed so as to facilitate the ready removal of the last from the shoe, and so that the shoe during the removal of the last will not be marred or broken or pulled out of shape.
According to the presentinvention, a last is constructed so that it will part and a heel part which are preferably provided between them with main pivot bearing pins or members that extend horizontally and transversely to the last. The toe and heel parts preferably bear directly against said pins and are held in position relative to said pins bya connecting link that is secured at one end. to the toe part of.
the last and at the other end to the heel part of the last by small pivot pins or rivets that pass through said link. The last is also provided with spring means, serving as holding means, which engage the side portions of said link in order to insure the last parts being maintained in extended position when they are in said position. This spring means or holding mechanism is preferably mounted in and carried bythe main bearing pins above referred to.
As showing a specific embodiment of the invention, reference is made to the drawing forming a part of this specification, and in which- Figure 1 shows a vertical sectional view taken as on the plane indicated by the line 11 in Fig. 2. In Fig. 1 the parts are shown in their extendedor unbroken position. I
Fig. 2 is a sectional View takenas on the plane indicated by the-line 2-2 1n Fig. 1, and is a viewlooking in the direction, of. the
arrows.
Fig. 3 is a view takenas on: the A V of Fig. 1 looking in the direction of the arrows.
The last is designatel by the reference comprise a toe character A, and comprises the forward or toe part B and the rear or heel part C. In the formation of these lasts these two parts are preferably made integral with each other from the same piece of wood, and they are separated as by sawing.
From an inspection of Fig. 1 it will also be observed that a V-shaped portion XYX has been cut out or removed from the upper portion of the last whereby the heel part and the toe part can be moved relative to each other in order to shorten or flex the .last.
The last is also provided with two main bearing pins D, which constitute main bearing members between the heel and. toe parts,
and with a longitudinally extending link E that is pivotally connected to the forward or toe part by the rivet or pin F, and to the rear or heel part by the rivet or pin G. This link construction is substantially the same as that shown and described in United States Letters Patent No. 1,085,668, granted February 3rd, 1914, for improvements in lasts invented by myself.
The main bearing pins 3) are hollow or cut out and in each of these pins'there is located or carried the holding mechanism or spring holding means that comprises the compression spring M and the cap or head N, the latter of.- which engages a cut-out portion 0 of the link.
The outer end of each spring M presses against the main bearing pin within which the spring is located, and the cap or head N at the inner end of each spring is forced toward the connecting link E. When the last parts are in extended or unbroken position they are retained in said position by the link, and during this time the caps or heads N will be in engagement with the cut-out or open portion 6 of the link, whereby said spring means can serve as a mechanism for holding the link in place- I The main bearing pins D are provided at their adacent ends with flanges or collars D- which are received in a corresponding c 11t' out portion in each of the last parts, an
consequently said pins cannot drop out or i become displaced even though they are not not limited to the precise construction and ranged sothat said parts can move relative to each other, and means-supported by said main bearingpins which means engage side portions of said link for holding. the heel and toe parts in their extended position.
2. A last having a toe part and a heel part separated from each other by vertically and transversely extending saw cuts, and provided with an open portion at the top thereof whereby'the heel part can be moved rela tive to the toe part in order to shorten the last, said last also being provided with transversely extending main bearingpins or members between said parts, the adjacent portions of said heel and toe parts also being provided with longitudinally and Ver tically extending saw, cuts within. which there is located a longitudinally extending link that is connected by a pin or rivet to the toe part and by a pin or rivet to the .heel part, the last also being provided with a spring holding means that engages a side portion of said link, the spring portion of said holding means being carried by a main bearing pin.
3. A last having a toe part, a heel part, a longitudinally extending link connecting said parts, horizontally and transversely extending main bearing pins between said heel and toe parts, and spring holding means which engage said link so as to maintain the last parts in their extended position, said holding means being carried in and supported by one or more of saidmain bearing pins.
4. A'last having a toe part, a heel part movable relative to the toe part, main bearing pins or members between the heel and toe parts, a link connected at one end to the toe part by a pin or rivet and. at the other end to the heel part by a pin or rivet, and opposing spring holding members which engage opposite side portions of the link, the link being provided with an opening or cavity therein within which said holding members enter.
5. A last having a toe part, a heel part, horizontally and transversely extending bearing pins between said-parts, a connecting link located between said bearing pins, one end of said link being connected .to the heel part and the other end of said link being connected to the toe part, each of said pins being hollowedout and there being located in each of said pins a holding means comprising a compression spring and cap the latter of which engages a side portion of the link in order to hold the link when the last parts are in extended or unbroken position, said link being opening within which said caps enter.
6. A last having a heel part, a toe part movable relative to the heel part, horizontallyand transversely extending hollow main bearing pins located on opposite sides of the last, springholding nieans located within and carried by said main bearing pins, and a connecting link connected to the toe part of the last by a pin or rivet and to the heel part of the last by a pin or rivet, the con-- struction being such that a line passing through the center of said rivets will move from below the center of the main bearing pins to above the center of the main bearing pins as the parts are moved from extended or unbroken position tobroken osition, the spring holding means being constructed so as to engage said link when the last parts are in unbroken position.
7 A last having a toe part, a heel part, a link connecting said parts, and bearing members between said parts whereby said parts can swing relative to each other, at least one of said bearing members having therein a holding mechanism that engages said link.
8. A last having a toe part, a heel part, and a link, connecting said parts, there being bearing members between said last parts whereby said last parts can swing relative to" each other, at least one of said bearing members carrying a mechanism that engages said link and serves to hold the last parts in extended position when in said position.
' This specification signed and witnessed this 20th day of March, A. D. 1917.
