The parts are so arranged that when the spindle 43 is put upon the jack (see Fig. 3) a lug 47 engages the rear end of the detent and unlocks the same, thereby permitting the relative movement of the fore part and heel part toward each other to shorten the last.
It will be observed that the detent 60 is in an exposed position, with the end that is to be engaged by the ing 47 of the jack in proxitnity to the outer end of the hollow spindle 43, so that the said detent will be unlocked by the engagement of the lug -t7 of the jack without permitting any portion of said jack to actually enter the last. Moreover, since it is not necessary that the lug 47 of the jack shall enter a hole formed in the last it is not necessary to accurately apply the last to the jack, thus saving time in placing the last on the jack.
In practice the fore part and heel part are suitably shaped, the recess 7 and holes 8 in the fore part are formed upon suitable jigs, and the plate 20 and its parts secured in position. A similar procedure is followed in the mounting of the plate 40, spindle-socket 43, and plates 50. The arrangement is such that the last is maintained against all strains to which a last is subjected, while at the same time the last may be readily shortened 0r rigidly locked in operative position, as desired.
Having thus explained the nature of my invention and described a "Way of constructing and using the same,although withoutattempting to set forth all the forms in which it may be made or all of the modes of its use, I declare that what I claim is 1. A hinged last, comprising a fore part, a
heel part, a web, parallel lugs upon said web arranged in complemental recesses in said fore part, a heel-plate secured to the heel part and forming the bottom surface thereof, a spindle-socket-projecting from said plate, two spaced parallel ears upon said plate in advance of said spindle-socket, said Web being arranged between said ears, and pivoted thereto.
2. A hinged last, comprising a fore part, a heel part, a Web, parallel lugs upon said web arranged in com plemental recesses in said fore part, a heel-plate securedto the heel part and forming the bottom surface thereof, a

4. A hinged last comprising a fore part, a heel partformed with a spindle-socket, a hinge connecting the fore part and heel part, and a detent for locking said parts in operative position, said detent being located in an exposed position adjacent to the end of the spindlesocket.
