J. STRANDERSL DISPLAY DEVICE.

. INVENTOI? Q5 flax-1049s ATTORNEY.
NT rrrca. I
JULIEN STRANDEES, or BROOKLYN, NEW YORK, ASSIGNOB TO HARRY B. KRUGER, 0r
NEW YORK, N. Y.
DISPLAY DEVICE.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JULIEN STRANDERS, a subject of the King of Great Britain, and a resident of the borough of Brooklyn, in the county of Kings, city and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Display Devices, of which the following is a specification.
The present invention relates to improvements in display devices, particularly such devices as are used for advertising purposes. An object of the invention is to provide such a device which may be formed of cardboard or other such material which when not set up will lie flat, thereby facilitating handling and shipping of the same, and which when set up will immediately assume its display position without the necessity for attaching any parts together, as by inserting tongues in slots, etc, as is necessary with numerous other such devices, thereby insur ing the proper setting up of the device, and relieving the person setting the same up from any labor usually incident thereto.
A further object is to provide such a device in which may be incorporated the representation of a human figure, and which will give to the same a life like appearance, permitting the head for instance, to assume a position in relief to the body portion, and which head may for instance, be shown as balancing an article upon the nose or fore head thereof, thereby providing a very attractive display. A further object is to provide such a device which is simple in con struction, and which will be inexpensive to manufacture.
With these and other objects in view, an embodiment of my invention is shown in the accompanying drawings, and will be hereinafter more fully described with reference thereto, and the invention will be finally pointed out in the claims.
In the drawings;
Figure 1 is a front view of one embodiment of my invention;
Fig. 2 is a side view thereof, showing the same in a set up position;
Fig. 3 is a rear View showing the same in set up position;
Fig. 4 is a rear view showing the same in folded position;
Fig. 5 is a detail view of the supporting member, and
Specification of Letters Patent Patgnted 13, 2, 191'? Application filed January 24, 1917. Serial No. 144,125.
Fig. 6 is an edge View showing the device ln'folded positlon.
Sim1lar reference characters lndicate corresponding parts throughout the several,
figures of the drawings.
Referring to the drawings, an embodiment of my invention consists of the front por tion 10, which in the embodiment is shown as having the outline of thebody of a clown,
but may ifdesired have any suitable decora-. tion. The clown in this particular embodiment is shown as juggling (Fig. 1) and with a small box in his hands, and a larger. box
upon his nose, these articles being intended to represent certain features of the advertisement, the Fig. 1 for instance indicating the price.
The head portion 11 is 'hingedly connected to the body portion by means of a flap 12 provided at the upper edge of the body portion, the head being connected to the said flap substantially centrally thereof, and above the said flap there is provided in the head, a perpendicular slot 13. The supporting member 14 issecured to the rear side of the body portionby means of a flap 15 provided on the said supporting member, and a cut-out portion 16 on the said supporting member is adapted to be bent at right angle's to the supporting member in the set up position of the device, so as to engage the rear side of the body portion, and thereby retain the supporting member in its supporting position. i
The lower edge 17 of the supporting member is at such an angle as shown in Fig.
clined position, when the same is set up, as clearly indicated in Fig. 2.. The flap 15 of the supporting member extends only to the upper edge of the body portion and the up-' per portion 18 of the supporting member is formed in a peculiar manner so as to bring about the novel operationof the de-- '90 4, that the device will assume a slightly injust the reverse, it being only necessary to straighten out the supporting member, the
22, the forward edge of which is shortened and is carried forward as at 23. The portion 18 is also provided at its upper part with a flap 24 which is spaced from the triangular flap 19 by the slot 26.
The flaps 19 and 24L are secured to a member 27, the flap 24 being folded in one direction, and the flap 19 in the other so as to maintain the said portion 27 in a position parallel to the, body portion 10, and in itspresent form, has the shape of a box, one corner of which is in engagement with the nose of the head. It will be seen that this' box hides from view the slot of the head portion, exposing onlythe face and a portion at each side of the slot. The said slot 13 of the head portion is of a length corresponding substantially to the distance between the lower end of the fold 20, and the inner extremity of the upper edge of the said triangular portion 19, so that the upper portion of the head above the slot engages the slot 22 of the supporting member,- and is recessed as at 28 so that at one side the head extends above the said slot 22 as at 29, and at the other side the head is curved downwardly slightly as at 30.
It will thus be seen that in the set up position shown in Figs. 1, 2 and 3, the head will be held at an inclined position to the body portion 10, and the portion 27, thereby giving to the device a very life like appearance in which the head is shown in relief against the body portion, and the member 27 is shown in relief against the head portion. This construction it will be seen, is particularly adaptable to the design as shown in the drawings, in which the figure is shown balancing an article upon his nose. It will be understood that many other designs may embody the same principle.
In the folded position shown in Figs. 4 and 6, the supporting member 14 is folded against the body portion, and when so folded the slot 22 moves the head 11 into a flat position so that the upper portion of the head engages the rear of the portion 27.
The lower portion engages the front of the body portion 10.
In setting up the device, the operation is head automatically assuming the inclined position. Thus the deviceis easy to pack in great numbers, and .is protected from in hinged member, and adapted to move the same from a flat position to an inclined position in the folded and set up positions of said supporting member.
2. In a device of the character described, comprising a body portion, a supporting member hingedly connected to said body portion, adapted to be folded flat against said body portion, a hinged portion con-' nected to said body portion, said supporting member being provided with an mclined slot engaging said hlnged portion, and
adapted to move the same from a flat position to an inclined position in the folded and set up positions of said supporting member.
3. In a device of the character described, comprising a body portion, a supporting member hingedly connected to said body portion, adapted to be folded flat against said body portion, a hinged portion connected to said body portion, and means on said supporting member engaging said hinged member and adapted to move the same from a flat position to an inclined position in the folded and set up positions of said supporting member, and a display member supported by said supporting member above said hinged member, said hinged member adapted to engage in its fiat position the rearside of said display member and the front side of said body portion.
In testimony, that I claim the foregoing as my invention, I have signed my name in presence of two subscribing witnesses.
JULIEN STRANDERS.
