Application filed June 2'7, 1916. fierial Ito. 168,217.
To all whom it may concern:
. Be it known that I, JOHN GEORGE ROEHM,
J r., a citizen of the United States, residing,
. structed in accordance with at Oneida, in the county of Madison and State of New York, have invented new and useful Improvements in Closures for Milk and Cream Bottles or Jars, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in closures for milk and cream bottles or jars. and has particular application to the disklike caps for closing such bottles or jars.
In carrying out the present invention, it is my purpose to provide a disk-like cap for closing milk bottles or jars which will be cut or stamped to form a tongue normally lying in the same plane as the body of the cap so that the mouth of the bottle or jar will be completely closed when the cap is in position and wherein the tongue will be equipped with means whereby such tongue .may be swung out of the plane of the cap so that the cream may be poured out of the bottle through the opening formed by the tongue.
With the above and other'objects in View, the invention consists in the construction, combination and arrangement-of parts hereinafter set forth in and falling within the scope of the claims.
In the accompanying drawings;
Figure l is a top plan view of a cap c0n-' the present invention.
Fig. 2 is a sectional view therethrouglr showing the tongue in the plane of the disk,
Fig. 3 is a similar view showing the tongue out of the plane of the disk.
Referring now to the drawing in detail, 1 designates a -disk-like' hap constructed of cardboard or other ,suitable material and adapted to fit into the mouth of a milk bottle or jar. The ca 1 is stamped or cut to form a tongue 2 .t lat normally lies within the plane of the cap so as to effectively Close the mouth of the bottle when the .cap is applied theretoL Ihis tongue 2 is capable of movement to a position out of the plane of the body ofthe cap, as illustrated in Fig; 3 of the drawing, so that the cream on the top of the milk in the bottle may be poured off through the opening formed by removing the tongue. 3 designates a metal finger mounted upon the tongue 2 and stamped to form a prong 4 that is passed through the tongue 2 adjacent to the outer end thereof., One end of the linger 3 projects beyond the tongue 2- so as to engage the main body por-, tion of the cap and limit the movement of the tongue in one direction, while the other end of the finger overlies the tongue and is preferably, although not necessarily, bent at an angle to the, tongue so that the finger may be pulled to swing the tongue to a position to be grasped by the thumb and fore finger. i
'W hen it is desired to remove the cap on; tirely from the bottle, the tongue may be grasped by the thumb and forefinger and the cap pulled out or the mouth of the bottle.
I claim: a 1. The combination with a disk-like cap for ntiillr'bottles or jars having a tongue stamped therefrom. and normally disposed in the plane of the cap and capable of movement to position at an gle' to the plane of the cap, of a finger mounted uponysai'd tongue and stamped to form a prong that penetrates the tongue and having one end projecting beyond the outer end of the tongue and overlying the adjacent portion of the cap to limit the movement of the tongue in one direction, and the other end formed to provide a finger hold f 2. A jar cap comprising a disk, a' tongue formed in said disk within the periphery thereof, and normally disposedlin the plane of the disk, a finger attached to said tongue having oneend adapted to engage the disk adjacent the tongue to limit the movement of the tongue in. one direction, and having the other end bent away from the disk to provide means for manually moving the tongue ,in the fother direotionp said finger having a prong constituting the'zne'ans of attachment between said linger and said ton e. I
3. jar cap comprisin a dish; a tongue formed in said dislrwithin the periphery thereof and normallydisposed in the plane i I I of the disk, :1 finger attacheci to said tongue rection, and havmg the ether and bent may from the dask to proviiie. means for manually mnvin the, tongue in the ether direction; said nger having a prong suns-bitmgamma ing the means of attachment betwean said finger and Saul tongue. m
In testimony whereof :afix my signature.
