To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, LLoYo L. MURPHY a citizen of the United States, residing at Woodlake, in the county of Tulare and State of California, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Jar-Closures, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in jar closures, more particularly for jars adapted to contain canned fruit, vegetables and the like, and has for one of its objects to improve the construction and increase the efficiency and utility of devices of this character.
Another object of the invention is to provide a jar closure including a vent orifice,
and a holding device for retaining the closure in position and carrying an attachment for closing the vent orifice.
Another object of the invention is to pro-- vide a device of this character which may be applied without material structural change to jars having different forms of closures.
With these and other objects in view, the
invention consists in certain novel features of construction, as hereinafter shown and described and then specifically pointed out in the claims; and in the drawings illustrative of the preferred embodiment of the invention- Figure 1 is a side elevation of a portion of a jar with the improvement applied.

The improved device is applicable more particularly to a jar having an annular closure receiving shoulder and a laterally proj ecting flange or rib at its open end, and for the purpose of illustration the improved device is shown applied to a jar of this character, a portion of the body of the jar being represented at 10, the annular shoulder at 11 and the encircling or annular rib at 12. The closure of the jar is indicated as a whole at 13 and is formed with a depending margin 14 bearing upon a suitable rubber or like packing ring 15 resting upon the shoulder 11. The closure 13 is rovided with a contral'vent orifice 16, re erably with an inner flaring portion as s own in Fig. 2. Encir: cling the neck of the jar beneath therib 12 be is a wire retaining band 17 united at its ends as shown at 18 and provided with outwardly directed loops 19-20 at diametrically opposite sides as shown in Fig. 3.
Extending over the closure 13 is a holding rod or member 21 havinga down-turned ter minal 22 looped at 23 around the loop 19 of the band 17. By this means the member 21 is free to swing upon theloop 19 of the band. Mounted to swing by an eye 24 in the opposite loop 20 is a rod 25 terminating in a book 26 to engage over the member 21 near its free end. The member 21 is extended near its free end to receive the ho'ok-,26,- and is preferably formed with an eye 27 at its terminal, to facilitate the handling of the member 21.
Slidably disposed upon the member 21, by ears 28 is abearing plate 29 having a yieldable p'acking'member 30 attached to its lower face. The member 29 is adapted to be disposed over the vent 16 of the closure 13 with the soft packing 30 engaging over the vent 16, so that when the hook 26 of the member 25 is engaged with the member 21 a pressure will be exerted upon the plate against the packing ring 15, and thus seal the jar.
When the jar is closed the device 29'30 will eflectually seal the vent 16 and prevent the entrance of air, but when the closure 13 is released to permit removal of the contents of the jar, the vent will be opened at the same time that the holding device 21 is detached and permit air to enter the jar and destroy the vacuum so as to permit ready release of the closure.
The improved device is simple 1n construction, can be inexpensively manufactured and adapted without material structural change to jars and closures of various forms.
Having thus described the mventlon, What is claimed as new is:
1. The combination with a jar including a cover, the neck of the jar being provided with an annular stop rib and the cover with a vent opening, of a retaining band encircling the neck of the jar at said stop rib, a holding member extending across the top of the cover and having one end thereof pivotally connected with'the retaining band and its free end provided with a finger pime, a closure slldably mounted on the holding member and adapted to cover the vent opening, and a locking member pivotally mounted on the retaining member and having its free end bent at substantially right angles to the longitudinal plane of said locking member and adapted to engage the holding member at the finger piece thereof.
2. The combination with a jar and cover, the jar being provided with an annular stop rib and the cover being concave-convex and provided with a centrally disposed vent opening, of a retaining band encircling the jar and bearing against the stop rib, a
holding member having one end thereof pivotally connected with the retaining band and its opposite end extended across the top of the cover and provided with a finger piece, a closure slidably mounted on the holding member and including a plate having upstanding perforated lugs for the reception of said holding member and provided on its lower face with a strip of packing material adapted to bear against the convex side of the cover at the vent opening, and a locking member pivotally mounted on the retaining band and having its free end provided with an angularly disposed hook adapted to engage the holding member at the finger piece thereof.
3. The combination with a jar including a cover, the jar being provided with a neck having an annular stop rib and the cover being formed with a centrally disposed vent opening, of a retaining band encircling the neck of the ar at said stop rib and provided with diametrically opposite points vwith laterally extending loops, a substantially L-shaped holding bar having one end thereof engaging one of the loops of the retaining band and its other end bent to form an eye constituting a finger piece, a closure slidably mounted on the bar and adapted to bear against the cover at the vent opening therein, and a locking member comprising a straight rod having one end thereof provided with an eye engaging the other loop on the retaining band and its opposite end bent at substantially right angles 'to the longitudinal plane of the rod to form a hook adapted to bear against the holding member at the finger piece thereof.
