To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, JOHN H. GILBERT, a citizen ofthe United States, and resident of Plant City, in the county of Hillsborough and State of Florida, have invented certain newand useful Improvements in Locks, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to new and useful improvements in looks, and the primary object of the invention is to provide a lock of this character which is especially adapted for use on warehouse, stable doors or the and movable out-of-operative position, so as to expedite the quick releasing ofthe Another-object of the invention is to provide'a deviceof this-character, which is easily and simply constructed;inexpensive to manufacture, and one which will be very eflicient in operation.

The numeral 1 designates a main body portion, whichis tubular,"being provided with a longitudinally extending slot 2, in the lower end 3 thereof. The slot 2 extends along the body portion to a point approximately half the length thereof, and adapted to be positioned within said body portion is a slidable shackle 4:, which has one portion 5 therein which is the longest leg of said shackle slidably mounted through the main body portion 1, with its lower end bent laterally and provided with a knob 6 on the extremity thereof. This laterally bent portion of the leg 5 of the shackle is adapted to engage the longitudinally extending slot 2, when the beep is released, as

clearly shown in Fig. l of the drawings. The shorter leg 7 of the shackle 1 which forms the locking portion of the same proj ects laterally therefrom. The shackle 4; is adapted to be held in locked position by means ofa pivoted locking lever 8, which is semicylindrical, having one end thereof pivotally connected with the body portion 1, and the free end of said lever projects below the lower end 3 of said body portion. The lower free end of said lever is provided with a notch portion 9 therein, adapted for engagement with the laterally bent portion of the leg 5 of the shackle, when the shackle is in locked position, as clearly shown in Fig. 2 of thedrawings; The lockinglever 8 is only in operative position when the shackle is locked, andthen the lever owing to its semicylindrical shape is adapted to be swung downparallel with and partly surrounding the tubular main body portion 1. A fastening member 10 may be secured to the body portion preferably mounted on the lever 8,

so that the lock may be held in position on the warehouse door or the like.

Disposed substantially parallel with the main body portion 1,is a supplemental tubular body portion 11 provided with open ends,

and supportedadjacent the main body portion by a pair ofprojecting loops 12 that are carried by the said main body portion. This supplemental tubular body portion 11 forms acasing, and has its upper end lying flush with the upper end of the main body portion 1;" The supplemental body portion 11 has formedtherein a longitudinally extending slot 13 having its? upper end extending laterally as, shown at 14 for a purpose to be hereinafter more fully described.

Slidably mounted within the supplemental body portion 11 is a keeper 15 which is operable by a projecting stud 16 that eX- tends through the slot in the supplemental body portion 11. When not in operation, the slidable keeper is normally positioned so that its upper end is disposed within the tubular body portion, but when the same is in operative position, as clearly shown in Fig. 2 of the drawings, the upper end of said keeper projects from the body portion, so as to receive the leg 7 of the shackle 4.

In operation when the various parts of the lock are disposed as clearly shown in Fig. 1 of the drawings, it will be apparent that the slidable keeper 15 has its upper end projecting above the upper end of the sup plemental body portion 11, and consequently the main body portion 1. The keeper is held in this position, by the projecting operating stud thereof being arranged in the bent portion 14: of the slot in said supplemental body portion, this holding the keeper in said position and prevent any movement thereof. When it is desired to lock the shackle, the knob 6 is grasped and pulled down out the slot 2 and the main body portion 1, until the same is positioned beneath the lower end of said body portion, whereupon the swinging locking lever 8 will engage the laterally bent end of the leg 5 of the shackle in the notch in the free end thereof. This sliding movement of the shackle will bring the locking leg 7 thereof down into the projecting portion of the keeper 15. This will securely-hold the lock in operative position and the projecting portion of the keeper forms a strengthening reinforcement for the shackle.

To release the partsof the lock, the lever 8 is swung outwardly, and the knob grasped and moved upwardlyinto the slot 2, whereupon the opposite end of the shackle willbe raised out of engagement withthe keeper,-

. and to expedite. the quick release of the object engaged, the keeper is dropped down into the supplemental body portion 11, by moving. the stud 16 out of the slot 14, and down along the slot 13, so as to withdraw the projecting end of said keeper.

This type of lock is especially adapted for use on warehouse doors, stable doors, or the like. The slidable keeper having a projecting end is adapted to strengthen theshackle, and also expedites the quick release of the look from operative position. This forms a keyless lock, and one that is easily and simply operated in a very eflicient manner.

From the above description taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, it is thought that a clear and comprehensive understanding of the construction, opera tion, and advantages of my invention may be had, and while I have shown and described the device as embodying a specific structure, I desire that it be understood that such changesma'y be made in said structure as do not depart from the spirit and scope of the invention as claimed.

Having fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is

1. A look of the class described including a body portion, a shackle slidably mounted therein, a pivoted lever adapted for engagement with the shackle to lock the same, and a keeper for said shackle adjustable in the direction of movement of the same.- w

2. A look of the class described including a main body portion, a shackle slidably mounted therein and projecting from one end of the same, a supplementalbody portion disposed parallel with the main body portion, and a keeper .slidably mounted therein and movablebeyond the end of the main body portion for positive engagement with the shackle.

3. A look of the class described including amain body portion, a shackle slidably mounted therein and projecting from one end of said body portion, a supplemental body portion disposed substantially parallel with the main body portion and having its end lying flush with the end thereof, a keeper 7 slidably mounted in the supplemental body portion and adapted to project therefrom,

and means for locking said keeperiu pro-' j ected position.

4. A look of the class described including a tubular body portion, a shackle slidably mounted therethrough, a keeper adapted to be cooperatively engaged with onewend-of the shackle, the other end of said shackle being bent laterally and having a knob-formed on the extremitythereof, a hollow semicylindrical lever pivotally mounted on the tubular body portion, and the-free end of said lever having a' notch therein adapted for engagement with the bent end portion of the shackle when'the lever is disposed parallel with the body to hold the shackle-in locked position.
