DRAWER LATCH. e *ffii Application filed February 17, 1922.` Serial No. 537,343. F' 2 To all fao/'wm t may concern.'
Be it known that I, OWEN MoTBY STEVENS,
a citizen of Canada, and a resident of Wallace, in the county of Shoshone and State of Idaho, have invented a new and Improved Drawer Latch, of which the following is a description.
My invention relates to a latch embodied in a handle for drawers or the like, the general purpose being to provide alatch for a drawer that will exclude children with out the necessity of locking the drawer and yet will enable the drawer to be unlatched and opened by adults with facility and dispatch.
The stated object is attained by a novel arrangement of latch devices associated with a turnable handle bar and constructed and arranged as hereinafter described and claimed.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings forming a part of this speciiication, it being understood that the draw ings are merely illustrative of one example of the invention.
Figure 1 is a front elevation of a drawer handle embodying my invention illustrating the same applied to a drawer shown in part;
Figure 2 is a horizontal section on the line 2-2, Figure 1;
Figure 3 is a cross section 3*3, Figure 2;
Figure 4c is a vertical section taken through the latch bolt;
Figure 5 is an enlarged section in a plane corresponding with the line 5-5, Figure 2 and taken through the latch bolt.
In carrying out my invention in accordance with the illustrated example, a drawer handle is provided, consisting of brackets 10, 10l one of which has its base 11 integral with the securing plate 12, the other bracket, 10, being separate from the plate 12 and having its base flange 13 secured by screws 14: which pass also through said base plate into the drawer A.
The outer ends or heads 15 of the brackets 10, 10a are hollow andopen at their op posed inner sides to turnably accommodate and form bearings for the ends of a handle bar 16 which is preferably knurled.`
On the handle bar at one end is an eccentrically positioned pin 17, secured to which is one end of a link 18 which extends through the hollow bracket 10, the opposite end of the link extending into a mortise on the line PATENT OFFCE.
has a second crank 24 therein and pivotally secured to said second crank is the shank 25 of a vertical latch bolt 26 which is slidably fitted in an internally threaded boss 27 on the top 28 of the latch plate 23.
I/Vith the described arrangement the handle bar 16 may be grasped for the opening of the drawer and given a turning movement to cause the eccentric pin 17 to rock the shaft 2l throughthe link 18 and crank arm 20 and thereby through the second crank arm 24 give axial movement tothe shank 25 and bolt 26 to withdraw said bolt within the plane of the top 28 of the latch for releasing the drawer.
. Spring means is provided normally tending to project the latch 26 to the latching position and at the same time restore the shaft 24E and the described shaft operating means.A In the illustrated example I have shown a coil spring 29 secured at one end to the crank arm '18 of shaft 21, the opposite end of said spring being secured to a iixed `lug 30 or its equivalent at the interior of the lock. There is illustrated a second spring 3l coiled about the bolt shank 25 and abutting at one end against the guide lug 32 at the interior of the lock, said spring 31 abutting at its opposite end against the lflanged inner end 33 oflatch bolt 26. Either or both of said springs 29, 31 may be employed and of suticient strength to restore the parts.
I would state in conclusion that while the illustrated example constitutes a practical embodiment of my invention, I do not limit myself strictly to the exact details herein illustrated, since, manifestly, the same can be considerably varied without departure from the spirit of the invention as defined in the appended claims.
Having thus described my invention, I claim:
1. A drawer handle and latch comprising brackets adapted to be secured to the drawer, a handle bar turnably supported in said brackets, one of the brackets being hollow, a pin disposed eccentrically on said handle bar at one end and projecting across the bore of the hollow bracket, a link pivotally secured at one end to said pin, a shaft having a crank arm to which the opposite end of provided with an eccentrically disposed pin at one end, means to support said handle on the drawer, a latch bolt for the drawer, a crank, means extending between the holt and the crank for imparting a movement el the latter to the former, and means between the crank and the eccentric pin Whereby said crank is made to turn with the turning of Said handle.
OWEN MOTBY STEVENS.
