CLARK S. COMSTOCK, SR OF EAST ORANGE, NEW JERSEY.
GARMENT-SLIDE.
Application filed May 27, 1916.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, CLARK S. CoMs'rooK, Sr, a citizen of the United States of America, residing in East Orange, in the county of Essex and State of New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Garn1ent-Slides, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to slides for suspenders, shoulder straps, or otherlike devices, and aims to provide certain improvements therein. Such garment slides comprise essentially a device having an upper and a lower bar and a central bar through which the strap is passed, the latter being looped downwardly to some fastening device such as a garment loop, and then upwardly to the central bar. Various constructions of such slides have been heretofore proposed, but those in successful use have comprised at least two pieces of metal and usually three. The operations of forming such 7 slides have hence been relatively expensive.
The object of the present invention is to construct a slide of thisch'aracter of one piece of wire and with a single operation. In the preferred form of the invention the central bar is divided at its middle to provide a recess through which the suspender loop may be passed, whereby to apply the suspender to the buckle without a subse quent sewing operation. To this end the invention comprises a slide having upper and lower bars, and whatis in effect a central bar, the ends of the wire being joined at a point beneath the strap, so that the joint is not apparent when in use.
In the drawings, wherein I have shown several forms of the invention,
Figure 1 is a face view of the slide in use.
Fig. 2 is a similar view detached from the strap.
Fig. 3 is a section of Fig. 1, taken on the line 33 in Fig. 2.
Fig. 4 is a section on the line el4 in Fig.
Fig. 5 is a face view of a modified form.
Referring to the drawings, let A indicate the slide as a whole which in Figs. 1 and 3 is shown in place on a suspender strap B. Referring especially to Fig. 2, it will be seen that the slide A is formed with an upper bar C, a lower bar D and a middle bar E E. I
According to the present invention the Specification of Letters Patent.

slide is formed in one piece of wire, the ends of which are connected within the body of the slide so that when the strap is in position as shown in Figs. 1 and 3 the joint is covered. According to the preferred construction of Fig. 2 the central bar is formed in two portions E E, the ends of which are separated sufficiently to permit the introductionof the loop F of .the suspender after the. latter has been formed by sewing the end G to the body.
In constructing the loop the piece of wire is practically bent at its middle, so as to form the section E of the middle bar, one part of the wire being then bent upwardly and then horizontally to form the top bar G and the other part of the wire being bent downwardly and then horizontally to form the bottom bar D. The ends of the wire are then bent to approach each other and thence inwardly to form the section E of the middle bar. At the extreme ends the wires are preferably bent around each other, as shown at H. The middle bar is hence formed of two thicknesses of wire and considerable strength and rigidity are thereby attained.
if it is desired to form the slide without the intermediate passage or opening J, the sections E E may be brought closer together. In this construction the bend of the two portions forming the middle bar E is preferably enlarged to form an eye K, as shown in Fig. 5, and the extreme ends of the wire instead of being bent around each other, as shown in Fig. 2, are passed through the eye K and closed down upon the latter.
The invention as thus described is extremely cheap and simple to manufacture. It comprises only one part and avoids the use of ferrules or separate pieces of wire. It can be made complete in a single machine without hand manipulation. The device when in use presents a finished and symmetrical appearance, being unmarred by ferrules or connecting joints. The device also renders it possible for the suspender operators to completely finish the suspenders, including the formation of the loop F, since this loop can be attached to the portions E E of the central bar after it is completed. Hence there is no necessity for a subsequent sewing operation after the slide is attached to the suspender.
While I have shown and described one form of the invention, it will be understood that I do not wish to be limited thereto,
since various changes can be made therein Without departing from the invention.
What I claim is 1. A slide formed of a single piece of wire and having an upper bar, a lower bar and a central bar, said central bar being composed of portions of the wire bent inwardly from each side, each of the inwardly bent portions of the central bar being formed of double portions of-the wire, which double portions lie closely adjacent and alongside one another, the central bar being thereby formed of double portions each extending inwardly from a side, the end portions of one double portion being formed by a bend in the wire and the end portion of the other being formed of the two ends of the single piece of wire composing the slide, the wire having a loop therein joining the ends of the piece of wire, said central bar being adapted to have a loop in an overall strap pass around both said double portions.
2. A slide according to claim 1, the ends of the central bar portions being spaced apart, whereby the overall strap loop may be placed on said central bar through the space between said ends.
3. A slide according to claim 2, the ends of the wire being joined by interlocked eyes formed on the ends of the piece of wire. a
In witness whereof, I have heretimto signed my name in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
