LEE K. LOVE, 0F ST. LOUIS, MISSOURI.
RANGE-COVER.
Specication of Letters Patent.
Patented Sept. 13, 1921*?.
Application led October 30, 1913. Serial No. 798,194.
To all whom z't may concern:
Beit known that T, LEE K. LOVE, a citizen of the United States of America, residing in the city of St. Louis and State of Missouri, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Range-Covers, of which' the following is a description.
The primary object of this invention is to provide improved means in a folded range cover whereby, when the forward portion of the range is in use, the nished side of one portion of the cover is folded on the finished side of the other portion so the finished sides are protected during the use of the range.
Another object is to provide a folding cover in combination with a range which can be folded back andI utilized as a shelf.
A. further object is to provide improved means whereby the cover can be readily and quickly attached to a range.
Other and further objects will appear in the specification, and be specifically pointed out in the appended claim, reference being had to the accompanying drawings exemplifying the invention, and in which,
Figure 1 is a plan view of this improved cover applied to a range.
Fig. 2 is a side elevation of the upper portion of a range, the cover being shown` folded back to form a shelf.
Fig. 3 is an enlarged section taken on the line TTT-TTT, Fig. 1.
Fig. 4 is an enlarged fragmentary plan view of Fig. 3.
Fig. 5 is a perspective view. of an improved hinge member which is adapted to secure the cover to the top of a range.
Fig. 6 is an enlarged fragmentary perspective view of a portion of the rear hinging portion of the cover which is adapted to be secured to one ofthe hinge members.
This improved range cover is designed more especiallyfor that type of ranges which have no warming ovens above the top of the range.
Referring to the drawings: 1 designates the upper portion of a gas range, said range having the usual burners 2 and chimney connection 3. Formed in the top of the range 4, and depending therefrom is the usual overhanging Bange 5.` Y
Secured at the rear of the top of the range is a pair of hinge members 6, each of lsaid hinge members having a top portion 7 and a depending portion 8. Formed in the bottom of said portion 8 is a clamping portion 9, said clamping portion 9 being adapted to engage the end and inner side of the overhanging flange 5. The top portion 7 is adapted to rest on the top of the range 4 (see Fig. 3). Formed on each hinge member 6 is a struck-out portion 10. Each of said portions 10 have a bearing 11 formed thereon and a lipped portion 12.
This improved cover comprises a pair of folding portions 13 and 14 which are hinged together at 15. The outer edges of each portion have a stiening wire 16 formed therein. Formed in one edge of the folding portion 13 are a pair of cut-away portions 17. Said stiffening wire of said portion 13 extends across said cut-away portions 17 as shown at 18.
Tn securing this improved cover to a range, a pair of the hinge members 6 are first mounted on the range top 4, which is done by engaging the clamping portion 9 of the hinge members against the under side of the overhanging flange 5. Tt is preferable to have these hinge members constructed of resilient material so they can be sprung into their proper places of engagement with the range top. The exposed portions 18 of the stiifening wire 16 of the folding portion 13 are then engaged beneath the lips 12 of said hinge members and are pulled into the bearings 11, which are formed in the struck-out portions 10. This completes the assembling of the cover on the top of the range.
As shown in Fig. 1, the folding portions 13 and 14 are unfolded, thus covering the top of the range. Tf it is desired to use the two front burners only, the portion 14 can be folded onto the portion 13, as shown in dotted lines Fig. 2. lf it is desired to use all of the burners, the folded sections 13 and 14 can be swung into a vertical position (not shown). Or the portion 13 can be left in a vertical position, and the portion 14 can be hinged at 15 and swung into horizontal position. The forward edge of said portion 14 is adapted, to rest against a support 19, which can be secured to the wall 20 (see Fig. 2). The horizontally supported portion 14 will then serve as a shelf 21. Tn view of the shelf 21 being formed above the chimney connection 3, it will be heated by the exhaust heat from said chimney connection.
When it is desired to use a range having this cover mounted thereon, the manner in which the cover is folded removes the finished side of the cover from the burners 'so no spattering which might occur during the use of the range will be received by the finished sides. It is readily seen how this improved cover can be quickly attached to x a range, asno drilling of holes for bolts is necessary.
What I claim is: f..
The combination of a, range cover, a range top having a depending flange and a fastening member, said fastening member com-
