Be it known that I, NATHAN L. BURTON, a

citizen of the United States, residing at Galesburg, in the county of Knox and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Supporting Devices for Ladies Hair, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to supporting devices for ladies hair.

The object of the invention is to provide a simply constructed cheap device of this character which will effectively support ladies hair when in unconfined loose condition and hold it away from her shoulders to permit the air to circulate freely around and through it and prevent wetting of the shoulders when the hair has been shampooed and during the drying thereof.

With the foregoing and other objects in view, which will appear as the description proceeds, the invention resides in the combination and arrangement of parts and in the details of construction hereinafter described and claimed, it being understood that changes in the precise embodiment of the invention herein disclosed may be made within the scope of what is claimed without departing from the spirit of the invention.

In the embodiment illustrated in Figs. 1 and 2 this improved hair supporting device is shown constructed from a single piece of heavy Wire which may be plated or not as desired and which isbent midway its ends to form a substantially circular open loop 1 adapted to encircle the rear portion of the neck of the user adjacent the shoulders as is shown clearly in Fig. 1, feet 2 are formed at the free ends of said loop and rest on the shoulders and merge into upstanding arms 3 which curve laterally in a direction toward the closed portion of the loopl, and have their free ends extended laterally toward each other in overlapping relation to form a hair rest 4:. The terminals of these overlapping ends are bent to form eyes 5, the eye 5 on one arm being slidably engaged with the other arm to adapt the device to be adjusted to vary the length of the hair rest 4:. v

In the form shown in Fig. 3 the shoulder and neck engaging portion thereof is the same as that shown in Fig. 2 being con structed of a single piece of wire, the free ends of the arms 3 of which are bent to formeyes 5 which are engaged with a rod 6, said rod forming the hair rest in this case. By sliding the eyes 5 on the rod 6 the arms 3 may be positioned closer together or farther apart to suit the comfort of the user.

In the use of this supporter the loop 1 encircles the back portion of the neck as shown in Fig. 1 and the upstanding arms 3 position the hair rest 4 of Fig. 2. and 6 of Fig. 3 under the hair adjacent the head, the position of said rest relative to the head being controlled by the curvature of the arms 3. The weight of the hair resting on the support serves to hold it securely in position on the shouldersof the user and thereby prevents the wet hair from contact with the clothes and shoulders of the wearer, and permits the air to circulate through and around the hair to facilitate the drying operation.

From the foregoing description, taken in connection with the accompanying drawing, the advantages of the construction and of the method of operation will be readily apparent to those skilled in the art to which the invention appertains and while I have described the principle of operation of the invention together with the device which I now consider to be the best embodiment thereof, I desire to have it understood that the device shown is merely illustrative and that such changes may be made as are within the scope of the claimed invention.

I claim 1. A device of the class described comprising a support for engaging the neck of the wearer having upstanding arms rising therefrom, and a hair rest cornecting the ends of said arms, said arms being adjustable toward and away from each other.

2. A device of the class described comprising a loop-shaped support for encircling the neck of the wearer and having rear- -wardly curved upstanding arms with a hair rest carried by said arms, and shoulder engaging feet formed at the junction of said arms with said loop-shaped support.
