BEDSIDE GUARD. APPLICATION mu) APR.15.!916.
Patented Sept. 18; 1917,

SAMUEL HASKES, OF BROOKLYN, NEW YORK.
IBEDSIDE-GUABD.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Sept. 18, 1917.
Application filed April 15, 1916. Serial No. 91,286.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, SAMUEL HASKES, a citizen of the United States, residing in Brooklyn, in the county of Kings and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Bedside-Guards, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to bed frames and more especially to side-guards for metallic bed frames.
One of the main objects of the present invention is to provide a bed frame having sideliguards for the mattress to be used therewit Among the Objects it is aimed to provide a side-guard that is adjustable in height according to the thickness of the mattress, to
provide a side-guard that is rigid, and to provide a side-guard that can with facility be so positioned that the bed frame may be used as an ordinary bed frame without such side-guard.
A particular feature of the invention is to provide a side-guard that is collapsible.
These and other features, capabilities and advantages of the invention will appear from the subjoined detail description of one specific embodiment thereof illustrated in the accompanying drawings in which Figure 1 is a fragmental perspective showing a bed frame equipped with the present improvement in position to guard the sides of a mattress.
Fig. 2 is a fragmental side elevation of the same.
In the present embodiment, a bed frame F is provided having the side rails 11 supporting the spring S on which the mattress M is disposed.
To the side rails 11 the side-guards G are attached each of which comprises essentially a plurality of short links 12, the lower ends of which links are pivotally connected to one of the side rails 11, and the other ends.
of which are pivotally connected to the elongated link or bar 13 common to allthe short links attached to one of the side rails. In the present instance the elongated bars 13 are disposed on the inside of the links 12 which is on the same side of the links 12 as that to which the side rails 11 are at tached. Therefore to permit the side-guards to fold down so that the bars 13 may be snugly disposed adjacent to the side rails 11, the links 12 are bent outwardly at 1 1.
To secure a side guard in its erect or guarding position, the anchoring member 15 is provided which comprises in the present instance a link pivotally connected at one end to the bar 13 a short distance removed from one of the short links 12 disposed on the outside of the side-guard G on which there is formed a stud 16 which the link 15 is adapted to engage. In-the present instance to permit anchoring the side-guard at various heights, the link 15 is provided with a plurality of notches 17 spaced from one another by which the link 15 is adapted to engage the stud 16 and thus anchor the same at a height determined by the notch 17 selected. For the purpose of clearance, since the link 15 is secured to the outer sides of the links 12 and 13, the link 15 is bent at 18.
From the foregoing it Will be seen that the side-guard G can with facility be folded down out of the way when the bed frame is to be used as an ordinary bed frame, and on the other hand when the side-guards are to be used for guiding the mattress, the same may be erected and anchored at the height desired which will generally be determined by the nature and thickness of the mattress being supported on the bed frame F.
It is obvious that various changes and modifications may be made in the details of construction without departing from the general spirit of the invention.
I claim:
A bed-frame having side-rails, short-links pivotally connected to each side-rail, off-set at the bottom above the pivot point from such side-rail; an elongated-bar pivotally connected to all of said short-links at the outer ends whereby said bar may be moved toward or from said side-rail; an anchoringlink pivotally connected to said elongatedbar at one end; a stud on one of the shortlinks adjacent to said pivotal connection, there being notches in said anchoring link spaced from one another, which are adapted to engage said stud, so that said elongated-bar may be anchored at various distances removed from said side-rail, thereby to determine the height of the side-guard.
