RALPH w. HURLEY, or BnooKvAL n, COLORADO.
COMBINED RULER AND PENCIL-SHARPENER.
To all whom t may concern:
Be it known that I, RALPH W. HURLEY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Brookvale in the county of Clear Creek and State of olorado, have invented new and useful Improvements in Combined Rulers and Pencil-Sharpeners, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to that class of stationery generally known as school articles and more particularly to a ruler and a pencil Sharpener composed of a single instrument.
The primary object of the invention is the provision of a casing attached to the ruler and carrying a sharpening blade, the active end of the blade protruding in alinement with the slot of the casing, whereby a pencil may be readily sharpened by the engage ment of the point of the pencil with the cutter edge of the blade.
With the above and other objects in view, the invention consists of the novel features, details of construction and combination of parts which will hereinafter be more fully setl forth, illustrated in the accompanying drawing and pointed out in the appended claim.
Figure 1 is a view illustrating the pencil Sharpener aiiiXed to the ruler;
Fig. 2 is a longitudinal sectional view; and
Fig. 3 is al detail view illustrating the eX- terior structure of the casing of the pencil Sharpener and the manner of retaining the sharpening blade therein.
Referring more specifically to the drawing, wherein like reference characters refer to corresponding parts in the several views, 5 denotes the ruler which may be constructed of any suitable material and having attached to the front face thereof and disposed longitudinally of the same, a pencil sharpening device 6. The pencil sharpening device constitutes a casing 7 which is constructed of aluminum, tin, sheet metal or the like and is formed for the greater portion of its length with an upstruck portion 8 presentinginteriorly thereof, a recess 9 for accommodating the insertion of a cutting blade 10 therein. 11 denotes the attaching flange of the casing having fasteners 12 passing therethrough Specicaton of Letters Patent.
Patented sept. 1i, 1917.
Application led December 7, 1915. Serial No. 65,582.
for securing the casing within an elongated opening 11 formed longitudinally of and at substantially the middle portion of the ruler 5, and the point of formation of the flange with the upstruck portion 8 is provided with grooves 13 for retaining the sharpening blade 10 within the casing and preventing the same from accidentally coming in contact with the surface of the ruler during the sharpening operations of a pencil or the like article. The sharpening blade 10 has its sharpening end 15 lying directly below and partially protruding through the transverse slot 16 formed in the medial portion of the upstruck portion 8 of the casing 7, and as will be apparent access to the sharpening blade is easily obtained and owing to the mounting of the cutting blade within the grooves of the upstruck portion of the casing, will permit of the cutting blade being adjusted longitudinally of the casing and adjust the sharpening edge 15 of the sharpening blade any desired extent with respect to the slot for controlling the degree of sharpening of the lead as found desirable. This invention is primarily adapted for the sharpening of pencil points, that is to say, after the lead has become worn, the point of the pencil is engaged withthe sharpening edge 15 of the blade 10 and against such edge, thus making the same useful in connection with a ruler.
From the foregoing description, taken in connection with the accompanying drawing, the advantages of construction and of the method of operation will be readily apparent to those skilled in the art to which the invention relates, and while I have described the principles of operation of the device together with the device which I now consider to be the best embodiment thereof, I desire to have it understood that the device shown is merely illustrative and that such changes may be made when desired as are within the scope of the claim appended thereto.
I claim:
In a pencil Sharpener, the combination with a ruler provided with a longitudinally arranged elongated opening, of a flanged U-shaped casing disposed in the opening and lengthwise of the ruler and provided with grooves, means passing through the substantially as and for the purpose speeio flanges of. the casing Jfor securing the latter lied. 10 to one of the facings of the ruler, and a In testimony whereof I alx my signature sharpening` blade mounted in the grooves in presence of two Witnesses.
of said casing for adjustment n a longitu- RALPH W. HURLEY. dinal direction of the casing and-*said ruler, Vitnesscs: Y permitting lthe cutting edge of said blade ERNEST BEACH,
being projected across a slot in the casing, `HENRY POWER. i
