Description

A. F. GRAY.
CURTAIN POLE.
APPLICATlON FILED NOV, Is. 1916.
Patented fiept. 11, 1917.
ADDISON F. GRAY, OF WARREN, OHIO.
CURTAIN-Porn.
1 b all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ADDISON F. Gun, a
citizen of the United States, residing at Warren, in the county of Trumbull and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Curtain-Poles, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings.
This invention relates to certain improve ments in curtain pol s and it is an object of the invention to provide a device of this general character having novel and improved means whereby curtains or other drapery may be readily and effectively engaged with the polewithout the necessity of employing pins or other members which would penetrate the curtain or drapery.
It is also an object of the invention to provide a pole of this general character provided with a longitudinally disposed recess affording a shoulder together with a removable plate overlying said recess and coacting with the shoulder to clamp a curtain or the like to the pole.
Furthermore it is an object of the invention to provide a device of this general character wherein the removable plate is provided with looking members coacting with the pole proper for holding said removable plate in applied position upon the pole.
The invention consists in the details of construction and in the combination and arrangement of the several parts of my improved curtain pole whereby certain important advanta es are attained and the device is rendered simpler, less expensive and otherwise more convenient and advantageous for use, all as will be hereinafter more fully setforth.
The novel features of the inventionwill hereinafter be definitely claimed;
In order that my invention may be the better understood. I willnow proceed to describe the same with reference to the accompanying drawings, wherein a Figure l is a view in bottom plan of a pole constructed in accordance with an embodiment of my invention;
Fig. 2 is a view in side elevation of the pole as herein embodied;
Fig. 3 is a view in plan of the inner face of the removable plate and illustrating the locking members carried thereby;
Fig. 4i is a View in bottom plan of myim Specification of Letters Patent.

Application filed November 13, 1916. Serial No. 131,084.
proved pole as herein disclosed with the plate removed;
Fig. 5 is a sectional view taken substantially on the line 5-5 of Fig. 1;
Fig. 6 is a sectional view taken substantially on the line 6-6 of Fig. 1;
Fig.v 7 is a sectional view taken substantially on the line 77 of Fig. 1; and
Fig. 8 is an enlarged fragmentary view in plan of the outer face of an end portion of the removable plate.
As disclosed in the accompanying drawings, P denotes a pole of predetermined dimensions and preferably cylindrical in cross section and which is provided with a longitudinally disposed recess 1 extending substantially the entire length thereof and which affords a wall or shoulder 2 extending to the periphery of the pole P fora purpose to be hereinafter more particularly referred to. The opposite wall 3 of the recess 1 is reduced in width asparticularly illustrated in Fig. 6 so that the longitudinal flat edge 4- of the removable plate K may coact with the wall or shoulder 12 of the recess 1 to effectively clamp a curtain or other drapery to the pole.
The inner face of the removable plate R is flat and overlies the outer edge of the wall 3 and said plate R is of such configuration in cross section that when the same is in applied position to the pole P, the outer surface of said plate R substantially conforms to the cross sectional configuration of the pole P proper.
The opposite ends of the recess 1 are provided with the longitudinal extensions 5, the bases of which being flush with the outer edge of the wall 3 while the outer portion of the wall or shoulder 2 adjacent the extensions 5 are provided at their upper portions with the inwardly directed flanges 6 partially overlying the extensions 5. The removableplate R is of such a length as to have its opposite end portions contact with the bases of the extensions 5 and the innor corners of the plate R are cut out or recessed, as at 7, whereby it will be perceived that the flanges 6 afford a means for maintaining the plate R in applied position.
Pivotally engaged with the under surface of the plate R are the cam members 8 each of which being adapted to be engaged within a groove or recess 9 formed in the wall 3 and whereby it will be at once recognized that the plate R is securely held to the pole P with the wall or shoulder 2 of the pole P and the flat face 4 of the removable plate R held in clamping relation.
For the convenience of illustration, a curtain or other drapery is not shown applied to the pole.
Each of the cams 8 is provided with an operating arm 10 possessing a certain degree of inherent resiliency and which is preferably substantially L-shaped in form with the foot 11 thereof seated within a notch 12 in the outer edge of the wall 3 when the cam 8 is seated within the coacting recess 9.
When it is desired to remove the plate R the arms 10 are pulled outwardly which results in the cams 8 being withdrawn from within the recesses 9 and after said cams 8 have been so moved the plate'R can be readily displaced. It has been found of advantage to have the portions of the wall 3 immediately adjacent the openings 9 beveled, as indicated at 14, so that upon swinging movement being imparted to the arm 10 the same may readily leave the notches 12.
From the foregoing description, it is thought to be obvious that a curtain pole constructed in accordance with my invenpos1t1on,
tion is of an extremely simple andcompara tively inexpensive nature and is particularly well adapted for use by reason of the convenience and facility with which it may be assembled, and it will also be obvious that my invention is susceptible of some change and modification without material departure from the principles and spirit thereof and for this reason I do not wish to be understood as limiting myself to the precise arrangement and formation of the several parts herein shown in carrying out my invention in practice, except as hereinafter claimed.
I claim:
1. A curtain pole provided with a longitudinally disposed recess, one side wall of the recess being of less width than the opposite side wall, a removable plate overlying the recess and provided with an edge coacting with the wider wall of the recess to afford clamping means, coacting means arranged at the extremities of the recess and the plate for holding the plate in applied and a latch carried by the under face of the removable plate, a wall of the recess being provided with grooves to receive the latch to lock the plate in applied position.
2. A curtain pole provided with a longitudinally disposed recess, one side wall of the recess being of less width than the opposite side wall, a removable plate overlying Copies 01 this patent may be obtained for the recess and provided with an edge coacting with the wider wall of the recess to afford olarnping means, coacting means arranged at the extremities of the recess and the plate for holding the plate in applied position, and a latch carried by the under face of the removable plate, a wall of the recess being provided with grooves to receive the latch to'lock the plate in-applied position, said latch being provided with an operating arm extending ,exteriorly of the pole when said plate is inapplied position.
3. A curtain pole provided with a longitudinally disposed recess, one side wall of the recess being of less width than the op posite side wall, a removable plate overlying the recess and provided with an edge coacting with the wider wall of the recess to. afford clamping means, coacting means arranged at the extremities of the recess and the plate for holding the plate in applied position, and a latch carried by the under face of the removable plate, a wall of the recess being provided withgrooves to receive the latch to lock the plate in applied position, said latch being provided with an operating arm extending exteriorly of the pole when said plate is in applied po sition, said pole being provided with a notch to receive the operating arm for holding the latch against movement when in locked adjustment.
i. A curtain pole provided with a longitudinally disposed recess, one side wall of the recess being of less width than the opposite side wall, a removable plate overlying the recess and provided with an edge coacting with the wider wall of the recess to af ford clamping means, coacting means ar ranged at the extremities ofthe recess and the plate for holding the plate in applied po sition, and a latch carried by the under face of the removable plate, a wall of the recess 'being provided with grooves to receive the ADDISON F. GRAY;
