Improvement in the Manufacture of Scythe Blades.

Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 123,964, dated February 20, 1872.
To allpersons to whom these presents may come Be it known that I, NATHANIEL P. H. WIL- LIS, of Chelsea, of the county of Suffolk and State of Massachusetts, have invented a new and useful Improvement in the Manufacture of Scythe-Blades; and do hereby declare the same to be fully described in the following specification and represented in the accompanying drawing, of whicl1 Figure 1 is a side view, Fig. 2 a longitudinal section, and Fig. 3 a transverse section of a scythe-blade of my improved kind.
In constructing such blade I form it of a plate of steel, and roll or bend such around near its outer edge, so as to form a tubular or hollow back, a, to the blade b,- or I construct the back a of a tube separate from the blade and slit-ted lengthwise to receive the blade, in which case I secure the two together by rivets 0 going through them. The tang d I form separately, and insert it in the back at the heel of the latter, and fasten the two together by rivets (1 going through them, all being as shown in the drawing."
I make no claim to a tang and a grooved scythe-back formed in one piece of metal and united to a blade. In my arrangement of the parts, the tubular back constitutes a socket to receive one arm of the'tang, which is recessed to receive the blade, also notched to lap'on the tang-arm, all being as shown in Fig. 2. By so recessin g the tang-arm the tubular back is lapped over and beyond it, so as to receive one or more rivets to go through it and the blade and alongside of the tang, all of which is advantageous.

combined together by rivets as described.
