Description
PATENT FFICE.
THOMAS V. KIIWBLE, OF INDIANAPOLIS, INDIANA.
IMPROVEMENT IN GARDEN-HOES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 119,986, dated October 17, 1871.
To all whom it may concer-n:
Be it known that 1, THoMAs V. KTELBLE, of Indianapolis, in the county of Marion and in the State of Indiana, have invented an Improved Garden-Hoe and Oultivator; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and eX- act description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawing and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon.
The nature of my said invention consists in casting a steel hand-cultivator or hoe, with its handle-socket and blade all in one piece, and thereby producing a new and cheaper article of manufacture, said device to be cast of steel or of any other suitable material.`
To enable others skilled in the art to make and use my said invention, I proceed to describe it more particularly, as follows, viz.:
Figure l is a longitudinal section 5 Fig. 2, a top View; Fig. 3, a transverse section.
The device consists of a curving blade, represented by b c, and a handle-socket, represented by a. The blade is of such a form that it bends both lengthwise and transversely, so that the convex of the transverse curve Will be on the same side with the concave of thel longitudinal curve, forming a point at one end, and gradually growing wider to an edge at the other. The
handlesocket a, which is a cylindrical tube, is cast on the top or convex side of the transverse curve. To accommodate the handle the socket is cored with a cylindrical hole, which, while it extends through the entire length ofthe socket, does not perforate the shell of the blade, and, as before stated, is cast in one piece with the blade.
What I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
A cultivator cast of one piece of steel, whose blade is curved both longitudinally and transversely, so that the concave of the longitudinal curve and the convex of the transverse curve are both on the same side, and which is provided with a handle-socket consisting of a cylindrical tube cast on the convex side of the transverse curve, and so constructed that the cavity of the said socket will not perforate the shell of the blade, all substantially as set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as mine I have hereunto set my hand this 6th day of March, y1871.
THOS. V. KIMBLE.
