HIRAM O. STOUFFER, OF OANFIELD, OHIO.
IMPROVEMENT IN EARTH-AUGERS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 1134, 32d, dated December 24, 1872.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HIRAM G. STOUFFER, of Oanfield, in the county of Mahoning and State of Ohio, have invented a new and valuable Improvement in Earth-Angers; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the construction and operation of the same, reference be in g had to the annexed drawing making a part of this specification, and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon.
Figure 1 of the drawing is a representation of a bottom view of my invention. Fig. 2 is a side view of the same. Fig. 3 is a side view taken at right angles with Fig. 2.
This invention has relation to earth-augers; and consists in constructing the same of a strip or strips of steel or other metal twisted spirally from the auger-point upward and provided with beveled cutting-edges, substantially as hereinafter described.
In the drawing, A designates a yoke or bifurcated shank, each leg of which holds a segmental arm, 13, curving spirally in the direction shown, and constituting the top bands of the auger. At the junction of the arms B with the yoke A the spiral strip is secured by riveting or otherwise. The strip is designed to be made of steel and of uniform width its entire length. The auger-point occurs at the S- shaped bend E formed at the middle of the strip, from which point the strip is carried upward in the form of two similar and gradually-increasing spiral coils, F. The surfaces of these coils gradually change from a horizontal to a vertical position as they ascend. G designates flanged L-shapcd cutters having projecting cutting-edges 9. One cutter is attached to each coil. H designates a twisted conical stud constituting the auger-point. The outwardly-facin g edges of the coils are beveled so that they may cut into the earth easily.
The auger is driven into the earth by boring. The earth cut away collects inside the coils and is removed by raising the auger, which forms a bucket for this purpose.
What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The improved earth-auger, composed of the spiral coils F connected at the point, substantially as specified.
In testimony that I claim the above I have hereunto subscribed my name in the presence of two witnesses.
HIRAM G. STOUFFER.
