GEORGE TURNER, OF BRISTOL, CONNECTICUT.
IMPROVEMENT IN SCISSORS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 123,3?1, dated February 6, 1872.
To all 'whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, GEORGE TURNER, of Bristol, in the county oi' Hartford and State ot' Connecticut, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Scissors, of which the following is a specification:
My invention consists in the improved article consisting' of sheet-steel scissors, each blade and its handle being formed from a flat piece and twisted a quarter turn just back ot' the pivot, which connects the blades, as hereafter described.
In the accompanying' drawing, Figure l represents a side view, and Fig. 2 an edge view of a scissors constructed according to my invention.
A designates the improved scissors, which are formed of sheet metal as follows, viz:
By means of suitable dies a dat blank is cut out from sheet-steel of a proper size, length, and shape for one blade and handle, connected by a narrow neck, G. The usual rivet or pin-hole is then punched out or drilled, after which the blank is twisted a quarter turn at its narrow neck G,'so that when the handle stands atwise the blade is edgewise thereto. The blades B are then ground into the bevel; or, if desired, they may be struck up in a die to bevel the edge and back ofthe blade and thin it toward its point. The flat portion F of the handles D E may also be ornalnented in a die and at the same time swaged or rounded up from edge to edge; or they may be left dat, as shown. The blades B B are hardened and tempered in any ordinary man ner and polished, when a spring, H, is secured to one ot' the handles D E, which are japanned or finished as maybe desired. The pin C is then inserted through the blades and secured, when the spring H bears against the opposite handle, so as to keep the scissors open when the handles are not held or pressed together.
By my invention these useful and convenient scissors for sewingmachines and other light uses are made of sheet metal, and are, therefore, produced at a very small cost, or at a cost far below that of forged scissors for similar purposes.
I claim as niy invention- As a new article of manufacture, the improved scissors A, formed of sheet steel, and having the quarter twist back of the pivot C and between the handles and blades, all substantially as and for the purpose described.
GEORGE TURNER.
