Description

illlntd tates @anni @Win12,
Letters lPatent No. 112,709, dated April 11, 1871.
IMPROVEMENT IN `SHOVEL-HANDLES.
The Schedule referred to in these Letters Patent and making pari: of the same.
in vthe county of' Kennebec and State of Maine, have invented a new-aud useful Improvement in Shovel- Handles; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact descriptionvthereof suflieient.
to enable those skilled in the art to which my invention appertains to fully understand and to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawing forming part of this specification, and in which- Figure l is a side view of a shovel-handle made according to my invention, apart being broken away to show the construction.
Figure 2 is an end view of the same. l
The object of this invention is to provide a shovel- .handle which shall be stronger and more durable than those as heretofore constructed.
The invention consists in the improved construction hereinafter claimed, and which will be now described in detail, reference being had to the drawing, in the two figures of which similar letters indicate like parts. y
` The part a, of the handle is made with a` bulge or enlargement, b, at the point where the handle is forked, in order to give additional strength at this otherwise weak point.
To further secure this object a rivet or bolt, c, is inserted at the fork of the handle.
The cross-bar d of the handle is formed at its ends4 with square tenons d', which enter recesses of corresponding shape in the forks e e of the handle.
ff are rivets which pass transversely through said forks and secure the cross-bar in place.
This provision of the tenons of the form described, and the employment of transverse rivets to secure the cross-bar, render the handle much stronger and more durable than those of the usual construction.
'g represents the ordinary rod or bolt which passes through the cross-bar and the forks e e.
I do not claim, broadly, a handle made by sawing or splitting the wood and then bending the same to form a fork, in which is inserted a holder, held in place at its ends by projections, as this is not new; but
Having thus described my invention,
What I claim. as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
The improved shovethandle herein described, formed with the bulge l) and recessed forks c e, and provided with the cross-bar d d d', rivets c f j, and rod g, all as Set forth.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the'presence of two subscribing wit- DBSSGS.
