Definitions
- Figure 1 is a side view of a scythe-blade embodying my 1 improvement
- Fig. 2 is a transverse section of the same.
- the blade proper and the rib are made integral and produced by bending a strip of thin steel of suitable width transversely to form the tubular rib and metallically uniting the edge of such bent portion to the blade proper throughout its length. In thisexample of my invention this metallic union is formed by welding; but it may be done by brazing. The blade may then be tempered and sharpened.
- the essential advantage of my invention is that the edge of the bent portion which forms the rib is united throughout its entire length to the blade, whereby I produce a blade which is of perfectly uniform strength throughout, and prevents water from getting into the hollow rib and grass and dirt from clogging in the joint between the blade and the edge of the bent portion forming the rib.

A. P. GERALD.
SCYTHE BLADE.
No. 263,162. Patented Aug. 22-, 1882.
UNIT D STATES PATENT OFFICE.
AMOS F. GERALD, on FAIRFIELD, MAINE.
SCYTHE-BLADE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 263,162, dated August 22, 1882.
- Application filed February 24, 1882. (No model.)
article of manufacturenamely, a scythe-blade or other blade having an integral tubular strengthening-rib at the back, the edge of which is united to the main portion of the blade throughoutit-s length by welding or brazing, as hereinafter fully described.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a side view of a scythe-blade embodying my 1 improvement, and Fig. 2 is a transverse section of the same.
Similar letters of reference designate corresponding parts in both figures.
A designates the blade proper, and B desig nates the tubular strengthening and stifiening rib. The blade proper and the rib are made integral and produced by bending a strip of thin steel of suitable width transversely to form the tubular rib and metallically uniting the edge of such bent portion to the blade proper throughout its length. In thisexample of my invention this metallic union is formed by welding; but it may be done by brazing. The blade may then be tempered and sharpened.
The essential advantage of my invention is that the edge of the bent portion which forms the rib is united throughout its entire length to the blade, whereby I produce a blade which is of perfectly uniform strength throughout, and prevents water from getting into the hollow rib and grass and dirt from clogging in the joint between the blade and the edge of the bent portion forming the rib.
What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
As a new article of manufacture, a scytheblade, A, or other blade having the integral tubular strengthening-rib B at the back, the edge of which is united to the main portion of the blade throughout its length by welding or brazing, substantially as described.
A. F. GERALD.
