coat-SHIELD. i
To all whom it may concern. I I I -Be it known that I, WALTER E. Woon, a citizen of the United *States, residing at" Rochester, in the county of Monroe and State of New York, have invented a new and Improved Coal-Shield, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates'to devices used for preventing injury to the side of a-house, the coal'window and the lawn adjacent thereto when putting coal into the cellar.
The usual method of housing coal is by means of a chute extended through a cellar window, the coal being shoveled from a wagon directly onto the chute or carried thereto in baskets or bags. Coal is heavy and it is quite impossible, even though skilfully handled, to put a supply into a cellar without marking the casing of the coal window or the house itself. Furthermore, pieces thereof fall on the grass and are hard to et out without leaving marks of work that disfigure the lawn; while dust accumulates on the window casing and is also carried into the cellar by currents of air through the open Window.
It is the object, then, of this invention to provide a shield that will protect the side of the house and casing of the coal window from dust and against being marked, that will cover the ground beneath the coal chute, and that will tend largely to prevent dust being driven through the cellar.
I accomplish these objects by making a shielding device such as illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in 'which,
Figure 1 shows in perspective view a coal chute and shield in operative position; Fig. 2, a view of the chute and shield as seen from the inside of a cellar window through which the chute is extended; Fig. 3, a detail showing in side view means used for holding the shield in place against ahouse; and Fig. 4, a view from the rear, with respect to Fig. 1, of a portion of the shield showing the opening therein through which a chute engages and the protecting flaps, such flaps being turned back against thebody portion of the shield.
Similar reference characters refer to similar parts throughout the several views.
1 represents the side of a house, 2, the frame of a cellar window and 3 the window casing. At 4 is seen a coal chute supported at its outer end on Suitable standards or Specification of Letters Patent. PatQntd Sept, 1L Application: filed man 24, 1915; Serial m. 16,822.
legs 5 and extending through the cellar window.
The' s'hield is made, preferably, of strong sail canvas and comprises a main body portion 6 having an opening 7 formed therein through which the chute 4 engages, such opening being preferably, although not necessarily, of'rectangula rconformation and when so formed is provided with top and bottom flaps Sand 9, respectively, and side flaps 10, all of which are stitched along their inner edges to the body portion 6 of the shield. These flap members are Wider at their outer than at their inner ends, for the purpose later to be explained, and are relnforced by having hems 11 formed along their side and outer edges.
When the shield is in use, the body portion 6 thereof is held against the side of a house 1 by means of comparatively heavy bars or rods 12 placed in an inclined position with their lower ends in the ground or r on the side walk 13 and their upper ends engaging the top of the shield to holdit in place. In order that these rods may be prevented from accidentally coming directly in contact with the house, it is preferable to form hooks 14 at their upper ends adapted to engage suitable eye members 15 secured to the shield at approximately six or eight inches from the top and side edges thereof.
The canvas forming the body of the shield may conveniently be of suflicient length to cover the ground beneath the chute L and to extend beyond the outer end thereof, and, if desired, an extension section 16 may be added thereto.
The lower flap 9 engages under the. chute and covers the window sill, the side flaps 10 protect the sides of the casing 3, while the top flap 8 rests on the side flanges of the chute 4, thus being held out of the path of the descending coal, and protects the Window 2; and all of the flaps, especially the top one 8, tend largely to prevent dust arising from the descending coal from being driven by currents of air into the cellar. The flaps are made flaring so that the side edges will engage in overlapping relation to prevent dust from getting therebetween and to better enable the flaps to retain their proper positions.
When the chute 4 has been removed, the canvas lying on the ground is picked up and coal that has fallen thereon dumped through Gapes of this patent may be obtained for construction, manner of using and purpose of the coal shield is sufliciently clear tocall for no further description herein.
