Description

JAMES J. HOSS & J. T. H'O SS.
Improvement in Gates..-
No. 123,902. Patented Feb. 20,1872.
.dttorneys.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JAMES J. HOSS AND JOHN T. HOSS, OF TIPTON COUNTY, INDIANA.
IMPROVEMENT lN GATES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 123,902, dated February 20, 1872.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that JAMES J. Hess and JOHN T. Boss, of the county of Tipton and in the State of Indiana, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Gates; and do hereby declare that the following is a full. clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawing and to the letters of reference marked thereon making a part of this specification.
The nature of our invention consists in the construction and arrangement of a farmgate, as will be hereinafter more fully set forth.
In order to enable others skilled in the art to which our invention appertains to make and use the same, we will now proceed to describe its construction and operation, referring to the annexed drawing, which represents a perspective view of our gate.
The gate itself is composed of a series of boards, A A, pivoted at each end between bars B 15, and also in the center to a bar, 0, on one side. To the upper board A is pivoted a lever, 1), to the front end of which is pivoted a bar, E. The lower end of this bar is pivoted to the lower end of the bar B at the outer end of the gate. In the center of the gate is pivoted a diagonal brace, G, the upper end of which is heavier than the lower, and hothends are beveled or pointed so as to catch on teeth or notches a a formed on the upper and lower ends of the outer and inner bars 13 B, respectively. When the lever D is drawn down in direction of the dotted line, the bar E is raised, lifting the outer end of the gate, and the upper end of the brace G, being heavier, naturally drops into the next tooth or notch and holds the gate.
A gate of this construction may be raised or lowered to suit the ground, and it is very simple in construction, having but one bolt and two pieces of wood more than an ordinary gate.
Having thus fully described our invention, what we claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The combination, with a gate, A B O, of the lever D, bar E, brace G, and teeth or notches a a, all constructed and arranged to operate substantially as and for the purposes herein set forth.
In testimony that they claim the foregoing, they have hereunto set their hands this 26th day of October, 1871.
JAMES J. HOSS. JOHN T. HOSS. Witnesses:
G. L. EVERT, GRANVILLE BISHOP.
