UNITED @IHMIIE PATENT HENRY H. 'VAUGI-IAN, OF MONTREAL, QUEBEC, CANADA.
HEAD-GEAR.
Speccation of Letters Patent.
Patenten sept.. a, ieri.
Application filed March 23, 1916. Serial No. 86,295.
To all whom t may concern Be it known that I, HENRY II. VAUsfI-IAN,l
. mu's, for instance, detached from the head covering, have been used and in other cases ear coverings have been attached and adapted to be turned up into the crown. In all cases, however, the head gear if affording protection for the ears lacked protection against rain or the water of melted snow running from the crown of the capover the car covering and under the collar of the wearer.
The object of my invention is to provide a head covering with means whereby the ears and back of the neck will be protected from both cold and rain or the water from melted snow lodging o n the crown of the head gear; and to this end the invention may be said to consist of a combination with the crown of the headgear of a horizontally extending rim and an ear covering member attached within the rear portion of the crown and adapted to be either turned down beneath the rim to protect the ears and back of the neck, or turned upwardly into the crown when protection for the ears and neck is not required.
For full comprehension, however of my invention reference must be had to the accompanying drawings forming a part of this specification, in which similar reference characters indicate the same parts, and wherein: m
Figure l is a side elevation of my improved head gear arranged for inclement weather; and
Fig. 2 is a transverse sectional view thereof looking toward the rear.
I prefer to apply my invention to a hat, and the crown thereof is indicated at B and the brim having its inner edge turned up within the crown at C, the sweat band stitched to the horizontal portion of the brim near the inner edge thereof and indicated at E, and the ear and neck protector at D. I may construct the head gear of any of the materials at present employed for the purpose, the sweat band being of leather.
The ear and neck protector is cut to present rounded corners G of suiiicient depth to completely cover the ears and concaved upwardly at the rear as at I-I. This protector is secured to the hat by an attachment band K. One edge of the band is stitched to the horizontal brim C adjacent to the stitching of the sweat band and the opposite edge is split and straddles the upper edge of the protector and the whole is secured together by a double line of stitching.
This particular manner of cutting the ear and neck protector secures the co-action thereof with the usual coat collar when turned up, by iitting snugly just beneath the upper edge of and within the latter, thereby securing protection for the wearer against both the wind and rain or snow while the rim eiiectively prevents the rain or water from melted snow from running down the back of the crown and onto the ear and neck protector and from it under the collar of the wearer.
What I claim is as follows:
An article of headwear comprising a crown, a horizontal brim the inner edge of which is turned up within the crown, a sweat-band stitched to the horizontal portion of the brim near the inner edge thereof, a unitary member adapted to be turned to diiierent positions, in one position protecting the neck and ears of the wearer and in the other position contained within the crown, the protecting member presenting rounded corners of suflicient depth to cover the ears of the wearer and having its lower edge upwardly concaved between the ear portions to co-act with the coat collar, and an attachment band having one edge stitched to the horizontal portion of the brim over the sweat-band and having its opposite edge split and straddling one edge of the protecting member and being stitched thereto.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two witnesses.
HENRY I-I. VAUGHAN.
