Description

P. PYS.
WEAPON.
APPLICATION FILED MAR-2!, I917- IIIIIII'IIII/III I Patented Sept. 4,1917.
PAWEL PYS, OF DETROIT, MICHIGAN.
WEAPON.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Sept. 4, 1917.
Application filed March 21, 1917. Serial No. 156,498.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, PAWEL PYs, a subject of the Czar of Russia, resident of Detroit, county of Wayne, and State of Michigan,
have invented certainnew and useful Improvements in Weapons, of which the following is a specification.
This invention has as its principal object the provision of means whereby an ordinary pistol or revolver may be converted into a form of sword when desired.
A further object is in the provision of means which enable the weapon to be used for either discharging projectiles in the usual manner, or as a weapon of close personal defense, either use being entirely independent and distinct, without conflicting one with the other.
This and other objects are attained by the novel design, construction and combination of parts hereafter described and shown in the accompanying drawing.
Figure 1 is a side elevational view showing a weapon made in accordance with the invention.
Fig. 2 is a fragmental top plan view of the same.
Fig. 3 is a view looking from the opposite side.
Fig. 4 is a sectional view taken on line 44 of Fig. 3.
Fig. 5 is a sectional view taken on line 5-5 of Fig. 1.
Fig. 6 is a perspective view showing a de tail of construction, and
Fig. 7 is a similar perspective view showing another detail.
In the figures is shown an ordinary form of automatic pistol such as is used by sol diers and the like, consisting of a handle 10, bridge 11, barrel 12, and lock mechanism 14:.
Formed with the body or bridge of the implement is an extension 15 containing an undercut recess having angular walls 17, in which are formed other similar but smaller lateral recesses 18, a third dove-tailed recess 19 being at the bottom; the general shape of the recess can best be seen in Fig. 6, which represents a washer or filling block 22, having projections 18' and 19 closely fitted to the recess opposite the rigid wall 20.
The blade 25, which may be made in any form desired, as that of a sword, saber, or the like, has secured to it a shank 26 formed and shaped in the m nner indicated by the block 22.
The blade shank-is further held in rigid relation by means of the screw 28 which is threaded into the shank, and held from loosening by means of the wing nut 29 applied to the end of the screw extending through the block 22.
Thus when the blade is inserted intothe extension 15, and fastened by the screw 28, it becomes to all intents and purposes as rigid as if integrally formed with the handle 10 of the weapon, the sight 30 of which is visible through the passage 31 formed in the extension 15, the rear sight 32 being close to the rear end of the opening.
In order to furnish a firm and reliable grasp upon the handle 10 and also to protect the hand from injury, plate 35 is provided, the same having an opening 36 at one end which is adapted to receive the screw 37, while the inturned end 88 of the guard plate is bifurcated, containing an open space 39 adapted to engage within grooves 40 formed at the extreme end of the hilt or handle 10, thereby preventing the fingers or hand from slipping off the hilt and at the same time guarding it against inury.
In operation, when it is desired to use the implement as a gun only, the blade or knife maybe removed by manipulating the nut 29 a spring guard and releasing the screw 28 so that the shank may be extracted from the recesses in which it is normally contained. Obviously, a reversion of processes will clamp the blade rigidly with the handle.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. The combination with an automatic pistol, of a body block extending oppositely to the handle thereof, said body block being internally recessed, a blade having a shank suited to be received in the mentioned recess, and means for clamping said shank rigidly within the said body block.
2. In a device of the class described, the combination with a handle, of an extension formed therewith, said extension having a recess larger at the bottom than at the top, a plurality of undercut grooves being formed laterally in said recess, a blade, a hilt formed with said blade engageable within the grooves and recess, a screw engaged with said blade, means for clamping said screw against displacement, and attachable to said handle.
2 H V I 7 1,238,820
8. In a device of theclass described, the into the shank of said. blade, a filling block combination With a sword blade and an aufitted to the recess, means for clamping said 10 tomatic pistol having an extension opposite block rigidly in place, and a spring guard the handle thereof, said extension being re? .elernent attachable to the block and handle.
cessed, the Walls of the mentioned recess be portion of said implement. ing formed at, an angle receptive of the In testimony whereof I have affixed. my
'in the Walls of said extension, and threaded shank o'f said blade, a screw enterable With signature.
