Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented fling. 255, 191'?.
Application led September 13, 1916. Serial No. 119,910.
To all whom t may concer/1t Be it known that I, Ti-ioMAs B. BREWER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Pages Mills, in the county of Dillon and State of South Carolina, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in l/Vrenches, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings.
This invention relates to certain improvements in wrenches and it is an object of the invention to provide a novel and improved wrench with double jaw faces at one end thereof and upon opposite sides of the wrench and wherein one pair of jaws is of a rigid type while the second pair of jaws includes a rocking jaw so that said last named pair of jaws may be effectively used as a pipe wrench.
It is also an object of the invention to provide a wrench of this general character wherein the rocking jaw has coacting therewith means to cause the same to be released from the work when bound or gripped thereto.
The invention consists in the details of construction and in the combination and arrangement of the several parts of my 1mproved wrench whereby certain important advantages are attained and the device is rendered simpler, less expensive and otherwise more convenient and advantageous for use, all as will be hereinafter more fully set forth.
The novel features of the invention will hereinafter be definitely claimed.
In order that my invention may be the better understood, I will now proceed to describe the same with reference to the accompanying drawings, wherein Figure 1 is an elevational view of a wrench constructed in accordance with an embodiment of my invention;
Fig. 2 is a fragmentary view partly in elevation and partly in section illustrating certain details of the invention as herein embodied; and
Fig. 3 is a sectional view taken substantially on the line 3 3 of Fig. 1.
As disclosed in the accompanying drawings, 1 denotes the shank of my improved. wrench to one end portion of which is suitably aflixed a handle 2 and having projecting laterally from the opposite end p ortion thereof a stationary or rigid jaw 3, said jaw 3 being of a thickness in excess of the thickness of the shank 1.
4 denotes a double jaw slidably mounted upon the shank 1 and which is moved relatively to the outer end of the shank 1 through the medium of the milled wheel 5 which is located within the recess 6 produced in said jaw 4L and which is also in threaded engagement with the shank 1.
7 denotes a rocking jaw pivotally engaged with the outer extremity of the shank 1 and disposed in a direction opposite to the jaw 3.
As herein embodied, the inner end of the jaw 7 is bifurcated to straddle the shank 1 and the base of the kerf S is inclined in a direction away from the shank 1 and toward the gripping face of the jaw and against which constantly contacts the flat spring 9 secured at one end portion to the outer end portion of the shank 1. It is to be observed that the spring 9 is entirely confined within the kerf 8 so that the possibility of the same becoming injured or otherwise interfering with the successful operation of the jaw 7 is substantially entirely eliminated. lt is to be further noted that the outer or free end portion of the spring 9 contacts with the base of the ker-f 8 at a point inwardly of the pivotal connection between the jaw 7 and the shank 1, whereby said jaw 7 is constantly urged in a direction away from the jaw 1.
The opposed faces of the jaws t and 7 are provided with the transversely disposed and oppositely directed beveled gripping teeth 10 whereby it will be perceived that said coacting jaws may be conveniently and effectively employed as a pipe wrench and for which reason the teeth of the jaw 7 face the shank 1 while the opposed teeth on the jaw 1 face the outer end thereof or in a direction away from shank 1. It is also to be noted that the inner edges of the jaw 7 are rounded, as indicated at 11, so that no obstruction will be afforded to the rockin@n movement of said jaw. It will be note that when my improved tool is employed as a pipe wrench the jaw 7 will be automatically forced away from the work when a return movement is given to the handle 2, while the teeth 10 of said rocking jaw are so arranged as to readily grip the work when the handle Q is caused to move in the requisite direction to impart rotary movement to the work. It will at once be selfevident that by this automatic movement of the jaw 7 relative to the jaw et, the work is materially facilitated.
From the foregoing description, it is thought to be obvious that a wrench constructed in accordance with my invention is of an extremelyT simple and comparatively inexpensive nature and is particularly well adapted for use by reason of the convenience and facility with which it may be assembled, and it will also be obvious that my invention is susceptible of some change and modification without material departure from the principles and spirit thereof and for this reason I do not wish to be understood as limiting myself to the precise arrangement and formation of the several parts herein shown in carrying' out my invention in p actice, except as hereinafter claimed.
I claim:
A wrench having a shank, a slidable member mounted on the shank and having a toothed jaw, means for adjustably holding the slidable member on the shank, a jaw bifurcated atits inner end to provide ears extending on each side of the shankthe inner edges of the ears being inclined from the adjacent end of the shank toward the slidable meinbe'rand outward, a pivot pin passing through the shank and through said ears and being located adjacent the extremity of the shank and adjacent the outer inner corner of the ears, said shank having' shoulders extending parallel to the shank and projecting laterally therefrom with which the outer corners of the ears are adapted to engage and abut when the movf able jaw is swung outward on its pivot to thereby limit the movement of the Jaw, and
a spring disposed between the shank and the inner end face of the jawV and urgingV Copies of this patent may be obtained for five cents each, by addressing the Commissioner of Patents,
