Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 123,772, dated February 20, 1872.,

r SPECIFICATION. To all whom it may concern:' Be it known that I, GEORGE H. DrMoND, of

' Bridgeport, of Fairfield county, in the State of Connecticut, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Sewing-Machine Thread-Gutters; and I do hereby declare that the followirig is a full and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawin g and to the letters of reference marked thereon.

Previous to my invention a variety of de-.

vices have been suggested and employed in connection with sewing-machines to serve the long enough to enable the operative to readily restart the sewing operation. It is, also, necessary to have the thread-cutting mechanism or device comparatively simple and inexpensive, while it is perfectly efficient in its operation, durable, and not liable to get out of working order.

To provide, in connection with the sewingmachine, a thread-cutting mechanism which shall, in .its combination with the machine, embrace all the advantages alluded to is the object of my invention, which consists in a cutting device such as hereinafter described.

To enable those skilled in the art to make and use my invention, 1 will more fully describe the same, referring by letters to the accompanying drawing, in which' Figure 1 is a top view of a portion of the work-plate or table of a sewing-machine with my improved cutter attached, and 'Fig. 2 is a perspective view of the cutter. v

My improved cutter is formed, as seen, of a metal shoe-piece, a, provided with aknife-edge, b, soldered or brazed on. This instrument is so shaped, with a point at cwhich protrudes, as to insure the guidance of the thread to the knife-edge b. A small screw, d, is so arranged in the metal shoe-piece as to enable it to be readily secured at any desired point on the work-plate.

In the use of my improved device, the thread is pulled over the edge of the work-plate and between it and the point 9 of the shoe a, from whence it is directed against and cut by the knife-edge I). In the application of my invention to different kinds of machines, the cutting device is so located and secured as the character of the machine and convenience will suggest.

Having described the construction and operation of my improved cutter, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

The thread-cutter described, constructed substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
