ADJUSTABLE PRESSER FOOT GAUGE 7 Filed April 13, 1931 INVENTOR Wi'l'fifwz epk Chuoln/el' ATTORNEYS Patented Apr. 5, 19321 UNITED? STATES;
PATENT OFF Ice JOSEPH GHUDNER, OFBYROOKILYNHNEW YORK ADJUSTABLE PRESSER FOOT GAUGE Application filed April 13, 1931. Serial Nb. 529,836.:
This inventionhas forits object the provision of an, adjustable gauge in conjunction with a presser foot of a sewing machine, wherebymeans will be provided for guiding the work to obtain uniform 'hems of various widths and lines of, stitching paralleling the edges of the hem's, and also for gauging or Figure ,2 is a section on the line 2-2 of.
Fig. 1;
Figure 3 is a section onthe line Fig. 2. V
Referring now more particularly to the drawings, it will be apparent that there is shown a presser foot 10 having the usual W needle slot, and a shank 11 for securing it in,
operative position on a sewing machine.
In accordance with the invention use is madeof a work gauge 12 having an opening shape of the foot 10, to receive the latter therein, whereby the gauge 12 may be moved transversely' in'relation to the foot toward and away from the needle which operates up and 0 down in the slot. An element 14 in the'form of a screw is used, and it extends transversely through the shank 11, and also through a lug 15 eXtending'rea-rwardlyfrom the foot 10 on the sidethereof opposite/that having the shank ll, said element 14 being loose'or, in other words, freely rotatable both in the shank 11 and lug 15. Theelement 14 has. a manipulatingknob 16 on one end which bears against the shank as at 17,-"and has a portion 18 which fits ina hole 19 in the shank. The element also has a head 20 on its other end which bears against the lug 15. The element 1 14 is thus mounted for rotation but is pre vented. from having axial movement. The gauge 12 has a nut or sleeve 21 secured there- 13 therein which. corresponds to the profile to, or formed integral therewith in threading engagement with the element 14;
From the foregoing it will be apparent that, by manipulatingthe knob to turn the I screw element '14, the gauge element '12 may be moved toward or away from the needle according to the direction of rotation of the element 14, and that such element maytherefore be. adjusted in relation to the foot 10, and be held in'the adjusted positions. In this way it is possible to guide the work passing beneath the foot 10 and also to gauge the width of a hem desired to be formed. If desired, the foot 10 may have a measuringscale 22 on the upper surface thereof. The lower edge portion of the gauge serves as a guid-f ing means for the work,wl1ereas, the upper edge portion th'ereofforms a means movable in relation to the scale 22 for indicating the various adjustments or widths.
Claim:
The combination with a presser foot, of a gauge provided with an openingto receive the foot therein, and means carried by the foot adjustably mounting said gauge in relation to the foot.
