FREDERICK W. BECKERT, DECEASED, LATE OF NEW HAVEN, CONNECTICUT, BY FREDRICK W. BEGKER'I, JIM, ADMINIEETEATOR, OF NEW HAVEN, CONNECTL GUT, ASSIGNOR TO THE GREIST MANUFACTURING- COMPANY, A CORPORATION OF CONNECTICUT.
SEmNG--MACHINE Specification of Letters Patent. Patented Mar. 23, 1920.
Application filed June 26, 1919. Serial No. 306,877.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that Fnnonnron WV. Bnonnirr, deceased, late a citizen of the United States, and resident of New Haven, in the county of New Haven and State of Connecticut, invented or discovered certain new and use ful: Improvements in Sewing-Machine I leminers, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings.
This invention relates to sewing machine hemmers and has "for its object to provide an adjustable hemmer which will not be expensive to manufacture and which Wlll be convenient and efiicient in use.
In the accompanying drawings Figure 1 is a plan view and Fig. 2 a bottom view of the improved hemmer. Fig. 3 is a front view and Fig. i a side view looking from the left of Fig. 1. Figs. 5, 6, 7 and 8 are detail views of the several parts of the hemmer, separated from each other.
Referring to the drawings, 12 denotes a presser foot adapted to be attached to the presser bar of a sewing machine and whlch presser foot is provided with a raised front portion 13 having a screw hole 14 and having also a side lug 15 provided with a notch 16 at its end. Attached to the said presser foot, by a set screw 17 entering the screw hole 14: in the presser foot, is a plate or part 18 having an integral hemmer scroll 19 and a folded-over lip 20 integral with which is an attaching portion 21 which is folded over said lip 20 and which is provided with downturned lug 22 adapted to enter the notch 16 in the lug 15 of the presser foot. The opening 23 in the attaching portion 21, which overlies the raised front portion 13 of the presser foot, and through which opening 23 the screw 17 passes, is somewhat elongated so as to permit of slight lateral adjustments of the said plate or part 18 and the stationary hemmer scroll 19 carried thereby, relative to the needle position in the presser foot indicated by the opening or slot at in said foot. Preferably formed integral with the folded-over lip 20 is a second reversely folded lip or lug 2 1 which slightly overlaps the end of the lug 15 on the presser-foot.
Sustained by the plate or part 18, which is fixed to the presser foot, is a second plate or part 25 which is slidingly mounted on said plate or part 18 between the lip 20 at the rear side of said plate or part 18 and a turned-over lip 26 at the front side of said plate or part 18, said plate or part 25 being turned under at its left hand end to form a looped part 27 which. embraces the stationary hemmer scroll 19 and which part 27 is provided at its inner end with a finger 28 which cooperates with a partial hemmer scroll part 29 formed 011 a plate 30 having an arm 31 which fits in a slot or opening 32 in the fixed plate or part 18 and which arm is securedto the adjustable plate or part 25 by means of screws 33.
The plate or part 25 is provided with a longitudinal slot 34: through which passes a set screw 35 tapped in a thickened portion 86 carried by the fixed plate or part 18, said plate or part 25 being provided at its right hand end with a turned-up lug 37 for convenience in adjusting the said plate or part, relative to the fixed plate or part 18, when the said set screw 35is loosened for the purpose of. adjusting the movable hemmer scroll parts 28 and 29 to different positions relative to the fixed hemmer scroll part 19, for making narrower or wider hems.
From the foregoing it will be understood that the improved adjustable hemmer consists of four main parts, to wit: the presser foot 12, the plateor part 18 fixedly attached to SHHljJPQ/SSQI foot but slightly laterally adjustable thereon and carrying the hemmer scroll part 19, the plate or part 25 adjustable relative to the said plate or part 18, and the plate 30 which is secured to the said plate or part 25 and which carries a portion of the adjustable hemmer scroll.
The downturned lug 22, entering the notch 16 in the lug 15 on the presser-toot serves, in connection with the set screw 17, to afford two separated points of connection of the fixed hemmer part or plate 18 with the said presser foot, so that the hemmer will be effectively steadied when in use.
The plate 25 is preferably provided with a graduated scale or gage 38 which is used in connection with an index finger 39 formed integral with the lip 26 at the forward edge of the plate or part 18, the said gage and index finger being convenient in indicating any desired position of adjustis i 1. A sewing machine hemmer comprlsmg V ment of the adjustable hemmer scroll parts relative to the fixed hemmer scroll.
What is claimed as the invention of the a said FREDERICK WILLIAM Bnoxnnr, deceased,
a presser foot portion adapted to be attached to the presser bar of a sewingvmachlne and constructed with a raised forward portion, a
latter is provided at its opposite edges with lips, an adjusta'ble plate mounted between said lips and carrying hemmer scroll parts beneath said first-named plate, and means for adjustably securing said last-named p'lateto said first-named plate.
2. A sewing machine hemmer comprising a presserfoot portion adapted to be attached to the presser 'bar of a sewing machine and constructed with a raised forward portion 'having a side lug which is notched} at its end, a plate fixed to said raised portion of said presser foot, a hemmer scroll depending from one end of said fixed plate and which latter is provided at its opposite edges with lips, alug supported by said fixed plate a means for and engaging the notched part of said presser foot, an adjustable plate mounted between said lips and carrying hemmer scroll parts beneath said first-named plate, and
adjustably securing said Elastnamed plate to said first-named plate.
3. A sewing machine hemmer comprising a presser foot portion adapted to be attached to the presser bar of a sewing machine and having a raised forward part, a plate having a depending scroll and provided at its opposite edges with lips one of which underlies said raised portion of said presser foot, but which is provided with an upper part overlying said presser foot and having an elongated opening, a set screw passing through said opening and by means of which said plate may be adjustably attached to the raised portion of said presser foot, a-
second plate fitting between said lips and carrying, beneath the first-named plate, two hammer scroll parts, and means whereby said plates may be adjustably secured together.
4. A sewing machine hemmer comprising a presser foot portion adapted to be attached to the presser bar 01 a sewing machine and having a raised forward part having a side lug which is notched at its end, a plate having a depending scroll and provided at its opposite edges with lips one of which underlies said raised portion of said presser foot, but which is provided with an upper part overlying said presser foot and having elongated opening, a set screw passing through 7 said opening and by means of which said plate may be adjustably attached to the raised portion of said presser foot, a lag carried by said plate and entering the notch in said presser foot lug, a second plate fitting between said lips and carrying, beneath the first-named plate, two hemmer scroll parts, and means whereby said plates may be adjustably secured together.
5. A sewing machine hemmer comprising a presser foot portion adapted to be attached to the presser bar of a sewing machine and constructed with a raised forward portion, a plate fixed to said raised portion of said presser foot, a scroll depending from one end of said fixed plate and which latter is provided at its opposite edges with lips, an adjustable plate mounted between said lips and carrying hemmer scroll parts beneath said firstnamed plate, and means for adjustably securing said last-named plate to said first-named plate, said fixed plate being provided with an index and said adj ustable plate having a graduated scale cooperating with said index.
In testimony whereof I aflix my signature.
