Description

1. T BAUER. -C ALF AND COW WEANEB. APPLICATION FILED MAY 23, 19!].

INVENTOR WITNESSES T I w BY 5% ATTORNEY UNITED STEI JOHN '1. BAUER, OF CAMERON, TEXAS;
- cALF Ann cow WEANE R. t
I Specification a Letters Patent. Pat ted Aug. 21, 1917,
Application filed May 23, 1917. v Serial No. 179,503. i
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1, JOHN T. BAUER, a citizen of the United. States, residing at Cameron, in the county'of Milam and State of Texas, have invented new and useful Improvements in Calf and Cow. Weaners, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to calf and cow weaners and it has for its object to produce a simple, improved. and-effective device of this class which maybe applied either to a calf or to a cow for the purpose of'weaning, 'the same. p T
,A furtherobject of the invention is to produce a simple, improved and efiective' device of this class including a harness or supporting device which is so constructed as to permit extensive adjustment thereof to fit the size of the head of the animal to which it is to be applied.
With these and other ends 1n view Wl'llGh will readily appear asthe nature of the invention is better understood, the same consists in the improved construction and novel arrangement and comblnation of parts which willbe hereinafter fully de-] scribed and particularly pointed out n the claim. I
In the accompanying drawing has been illustrated a simple and preferred'form of the invention, it being, however, understood that no limitation is necessarily made to the precise structural details therein exhibited, but that changes, alterations and modifications within the scope of the claim may be resorted to when desired.
In the drawing:
Figure 1 is a perspective view of the improved device showing also in dotted lines the head of an animal to which it is applied.
Fig. 2 is a sectional view taken through the nose band and the chin strap.
Fig. 3 is a perspective view showing the frame detached from the harness.
Corresponding parts'in the several figl ures of the drawing are denoted by like structure.
the prongs '17' about midway of their Y length. The yoke 15 and prongs 17 may be madepby'bending, from a metallic rod of proper dimensions, and the yoke or arch 18 may be welded or otherwise-secured on the prongs so as to form a rigid frame the bolt latch C. The crown strap is composed of two membersone "ofwhich, 19, is
' connected at one endwith one {of the slots 16, said member carryingat its other end a buckle 20; the other member of the crown strap, designated by 21, is'connected at one end with-the other slot 16, its other end being adjustably connected with the A head sta-ll is provided the; same comprising the crown strap B and buckle 20 for which purpose it is provided with a plurality ofperforations 22 for the receptionof the tongue of the buckle. The crown strap m'aythus be adjusted as to the length thereof, enabling it to be fitted to the heads of animals of various sizes.
The throat latch is composed of two members 23 and 24 adjustably connected together at one end through the medium of a buckle v 25 carried by one of said members. The
other ends of the respective members 23 and 24 are formed with terminal loops 26 and. 27 that slidablyengage the members 19 and 21 of the crown strap. The loops 26 and '27 may be adjustably connected with the members 19 and 21 by means of tie strings 28 for the passage of which the loops and the members 19' and 21'are suitably per-.
forated. The throat latch is thus adjust ably mounted and secured with respect to the crown strap in a very simple and effective manner, and without the use of buckles or similar fastening devices.
D designates a noseband which is of a width approxlmately equal to the distance between the yoke 15 and the arch 18 between which the said nose band is positioned.
The nose band is provided at one end with a loop 29 surrounding one of the prongs 17 the other end of the nose band terminates in a tongue 30 which is bent around theother prong 17 and is provided with a buckle 31 adjustably engaged by a billet strap 32 which is secured on thexexternal face of the nose strap. I
The, side walls or side members of the loop 29 are provided with slots 33 through which is threaded the chin strap E, said chin strap being also threaded through slots in the body and tongue portions D and i 30 of the nose band, several such slots being provided so that at various adjustments of the nose band two such slots may be brought into alinement for the passage of-the chin strap. The chin strap is provided atone end with-a'buckle85 with whichits other end is adjustably engaged.
It will be readily seen that by proper adjustment ofthe chin strap andof the nose band, the said band and strap may be fitted snugly on the head of an animal, the device being secured by proper application'and adjustment of the crown strap and throatlatch.
The yoke and arch 18 will extend for-v \vardly of the head of-the animal and the prongs 17 will extend downwardly, being bent slightly in a forward direction, said prongs-being so proportioned as to terminate-about even with the mouth of the animal. h-en applied to a calf, the prongs,
will prick'the udder of the cow when the calf attempts to feed and the cow to protect itself will chase the calf away. In like manner the device may be usefully applied to cows who are in the habit of sucking their own milk.
Ilaving thus described the invention, what is claimed as new is:
In a *weaner, a frame comprising a yoke having limbs provided with longitudinal slots nearthe ends thereof, each limb being provided with a curved prong extending substantially at right angles thereto, an arch rigidly connecting the prongs together, a
head stall connected with the slots in the limbs of the yoke, a nose band engaging the prongs intermediate the yoke and the arch and adjustably connected therewith, said nose band having portions provided with slots, and a chin strap threaded through such slots and having end portions surrounding'the prongs and adjustably connected together.
In testimony whereofI aflix my signature.
"JO T. BAUER.
