ROBERT' lV. ELLIS, OF NEV YORK, N. Y.
OPERATING-HALTER.
SPECIFICATION forming part or' Letters Patent No. 699,947, dated May 13, 1902. Application filed March 6,1902. Serial No. 96,891. (No model.)
To all whom, t may concern:
Be it known that l, ROBERT W. ELLIS, aeitizen of the United States, residing in the borough of Manhattan, city of New York, State of New York, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Operating-Haltcrs, of which the following is a description- My invention relates to improvements in operating-halters designed for the use of veterinary surgeons in performinglr ope rations on the heads of horses-as, for instance, the Heating of the animals teeth.
The object is to provide a simple, cheap, and easily-applied halter by means ofk which the horses head will be held stationary and in such a way as not to interfere with dental operations by the pressing of the cheeks of the animal against Vthe teeth.
In order that the invention may be better understood, attention is directed to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, and in which- Figure 1 is a perspective view showing the neck and head of a horse withl the improved operating-halter in place; Fig. 2, a side View of the halter; Fig. 3, a front View thereof, and Fig. 4 a section on the line 4 et of Fig. 3.
In all of the above views corresponding parts are represented by the same numerals of reference.
A strap 1 passes over the animals head behind the ears and is' secured at its ends to buckles 2 2 for adjusting the length of the strap 1 at each side. A strap 3 passes across the forehead below the ears. The buckles 2 are carried by straps 4., which are connected to rings 5 at each side. Connecting the rings 5 is a strap 6, which passes behind the jaw and which is provided with a buckle 7 for adjusting it. Extending down from each of the rings 5 on each side is a strap 8, connected to a bridge 9. This bridge is made, preferably, of galvanized iron and is provided of the nose. Preferably the bridge is provided witha padding 11 to prevent injury.4
The bridge is also provided with offset portions 12, which are located opposite the animals cheeks and which prevent the cheeks frombeing pressed against the teeth to`obstruct dental operations. bridge are connected by a yoke 13, fastened The ends of the to the bridge by snap-hooks 14, which yoke is located behind the animals under jaw and is connectedr by a strap 15 with the surcingle, said strap having a buckle 16 thereon. Running over the strap 1 is a strap 17, which passes under the buckles 2, and the ends of which are connected by buckles 18 with a loop 19, having, preferably, asection 2O ofrubber tubing thereon. This tubing is placed between the animals upper lip and upper teeth and in use will be practically hidden by the upper lip. The loop 19 is provided with two rings 2l thereon, from which guys 22 lead off for attachment with the side beams of the stall or elsewhere.
In operation the horse is backed into the stall, the strap 1 placed over the head, the strap 3 over the forehead, the strap 6 under the jaw, the bridge 9 resting on the nose, the yoke 13 under the' lower jaw, and the loop 19 arranged with its protecting tubing under the animals upper lip. The side guys 22 are now tightened, so as to elevate the horses head and hold it elevated, and the buckle 16 is tightened so as `to pull down on the head and prevent further elevation thereof. It will thus be seen that the horse will be prevented from moving its heady upward by reason of the connection with the surcingle or downward by reason of the side guys 22, which guys, being connected with the loop 19, arranged beneath the upper lip, prevent the animals head from moving from side to side. The horses head being thus held stationary, any operations thereon can be performed. It will be noted that the improved halter is not provided with any bit and that the 0E- set portions 12 prevent the cheeks from pressing against the teeth, so that the latter will be entirely unobstructed and can be very conveniently operated on.
Having now described my invention, what I claim is 1. As a new manufacture, an operating- 'halter'composed of side straps, a bridge connected with said straps for engaging the animals nose, a yoke connected with the side straps for insertion beneath the animals upper lip, side guys connected to said yoke, and. means for adjusting said yoke, substantially as set forth.
3. As a new manufacture, an operatinghalter composed of side straps, a bridge connected with said straps for engaging the animals nose, a surcingle connection to said bridge, a yoke connected with the side straps for insertion beneath the animals upper lip, and side guys connected to said yoke, substantially as set forth.
4. As a new manufacture, an operatinghalter composed of side straps, a bridge connected with said straps for engaging the animals nose, a loop connected with the side straps for insertion beneath the animals upper lip, side guys connected to said loop, a yoke connected to said bridge, and a surcingle connection to said yoke, substantially as set forth.
5. As a new manufacture, an operatinghalter composed of side straps, a bridge connected with said straps for engaging the animals nose, a loop connected with the side straps for insertion beneath the animals upper lip, side guys connected to said loop, a yoke movably connected to said bridge, and a surcingle connection to said yoke, substantially as set forth.
6. As a new manufacture, an operatinghalter composed of side straps, a bridge connected with said straps for engaging the animals nose, a loop connected with the side straps for insertion beneath the animals upper lip, side guys connected to said loop, and a tubular protecting-padding on said loop, substantially as set forth.
7. As a new manufacture, an operatinghalter composed of side straps, a bridge connected with said straps for engaging the aniinals nose, a loop connected with the side straps for insertion beneath the animals upper lip, side guys connected to said loop, and a rubber tube on said loop for protecting the saine, substantially as set forth.
S. As a new article of manufacture, an operating-halter comprising side straps, a rigid bridge connected to said straps and engaging the animals nose, said bridge having offset portions coincident with the cheeks, and side guys connected to said halter, substantially as set forth.
9. As a new article of manufacture, an operating-halter'comprisingside straps, abridge connected to said straps and engaging the animals nose, said bridge having offset portions coincident with the cheeks, a padding for said bridge, and side guys connected to said halter, substantially as set forth.
This specification signed and witnessed this 18th day of February, 1902.
