To all whom 'it may concern." 1
Be it known that I, CHARLES C. BROWN, a citizen of the United States, and resident of Macon, in the county of Bibb and State of Georgia, have invented a new and Imroved Waste-Receptacle, of which the folowing is a full, clear, and exact description.
My invention relates to a receptacle for receiving ashes, refuse, garbage, or any sort of vwaste material.
' The object of my invention is to provide a Waste receptacle which will automatically close after using, thus retaining any dust arising from the deposit of ashes or other material of like nature, and preventing the escape of noxious odors from the refuse and laced therein.

Lastly, itis my object to make a receptacle which will be tightly closed, so that the contents will be `inaccessible to iiies, etc., and will be retained Without spilling while being re1noved,thus insuring a clean and sanita disposal of waste matter.

The'body of the receptacle 1 is a common forni of garbage can provided with side handles and havin longitudinal guards y extendin to within a short distance of the top an bottom of the can, but the top opening of the receptacle, instead of being in a. plane parallel -with the plane of the base, lies in a plane inclined to the plane of the Specification of Letters Patent.

The cover 4 also carries a downwardly projecting circumferential ilange 5 adapted to overlap and snugly t the upper edge of the bod of the receptacle.
It wi l be noted that the depending iiange 5 is situated tothe right of the axial supporting means 7 shown in Fi 3, and the body fiange 3 extends to the le t of said supporting means, ,said flanges, together with the cover 4, uniting to form a waterproof top for said receptacle.

The flange 3 on the cover 4. is broken at 9 to provide an aperture for draining oi water collecting on the cover, said aperture 9 being in registry with an aperture l() located at the lowermost point of the inclined top opening and through the wall of the body 1.
In order to bring about the automatic closing of the cover i, after the material is deposited in the receptacle, I position the cover 4 on rod 7 in such amanner that the rod 7 does not pass through the center of gravity of the cover, but is eccentrically fastened on that side ot the center of the cover may be attached to the upper portion of said incmied cover falling to the right of tho V axial support-shown in Fig. 3.
In using my waste receptacle, the material may be deposited therein by inai'nially depressing the lower portion of the inclined cover, or it will be perceived that the weight of the material may frequently be suiciently great to ovexbalance the counter- Weight, tending'to close the cover of the receptacle, in which case the material may be emptied on the cover from which itwill descend into the receptacle by gravity, automatically opening said cover, the roll or iiangeQ serving to retain the material in place on the cover before the opening thereof, and preventing the overiow of material While sliding from said cover into the receptacle.
When exposed to rain, the interior ot the. receptacle and contents areY kept dry by means of flanges 2 and 5, and the water, as fast as it falls on the inclined cover. is collected by the flange 3 conducted tl'iroiigh the apertures 9 and 10, and discharged outside the receptacle.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire.I to secure .by LettcrS Patent:
1.
