Be it known that 1,HARRY M. RASMUS- soN, a Vcitizen of the United States of America, residing at Fairview, in the county of Sanpete and State of Utah, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Receipt-Cutters, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein Vto the accompanying drawing. i
This invention relates to a receipt cutter and has for its principal object the production of a device which is adapted to firmly hold the receipt upon the tray in such a manner as to permit the receipt to be torn and Vat the same time notched along the margin being torn, thereby indicating the amount received.
Another object of this invention is the production of a receipt cutter wherein the tray is adapted to lit about the receipt for holding the same against side displacement, while a clamping frame is provided which is normally urged in one direction so as to hold a plate carried thereby in a binding engagement with the receipt for preventing the receipt from accidentally moving or jumping from the tray.
Another object of this invention is the production of a receipt cutter wherein the slide is mounted upon the frame, this slide being provided with a notching point so that as the slide is moved transversely across the tray it may be moved to a desired position so that as the receipt is being torn along the plate carried by the frame it will be notched by the slide, thus indicating the amount received.
With these and other objects in view this invention consists of certain novel combinations, constructions, and arrangements of parts as will beA hereinafter fully described and claimed.
In the accompanying drawing Figure 1 is a top plan view of the receipt cutter showing the same in position for use.

Fig. 6 is a fragmentary perspective view of a portion of the tray, illustrating the notch formed in the side flange thereof.
Referring to the accompanying drawings by numerals it will be seen that the tray is formed from a blank sheet of material and comprises a base 1, having the upwardly extending and comparatively narrow side flanges 2 formed thereon. The end flange 3 is bent upwardly so as to t upon a plurality of the ends of the side flanges 2, as shown in Figs. l and 2, thereby forming an inclosed structure at one end. At the opposite end of the body l the body is continued to provide a strip 4 which is bent around the adjacent ends of the side fianges 2 opposite to the end upon which the flange 3 fits. This strip 4 is bent so as to form a cylindrical end having a horizontally extending portion 5 extending parallel to the body l, which horizontally extending portion 5 terminates in a depending wall 6 which fits upon the base l, as shown in Fig. 3. In this manner it will be seen that the strips extend around and in combination with the side lianges 2 will form an inclosed spring housing, as shown in Figs. 3 and 4. From this description it will be seen that the receipts 7 may be positioned upon the base l and will be held against side displacement by the side flanges 2, the end flange 3, andthe wall 6, since these receipts will lit snugly upon the inner portions of these elements.
The clamping frame comprises the spindle 8 upon which a coil spring 9 is carried, this having one end carried by the spindle 8 and extending thereinto in the usual manner, as shown at l0, while the opposite end 11 of the coil spring will bear upon the strip 4, whereby the spindle 8 will be normally urged in one direction. The blocks 12 are shrunk upon or secured in any suitable manner to the ends of the spindle 8 and extend out through the side flanges 2, as shown in Fig. 4. The side arms 13 extend into and as a consequence are carried by the blocks 12 so as to be. urged in one direction, while the blocks 14 carried upon the free ends of the arms 13 are adapted to thetray as desired. As soon, however, as
the clamping frame is released, the tension of the spring 9 will cause the same to be swung to its normal position so as to allow the blocks 111 to iit within the notches 16 of the side flanges 2 and permit the strands 15 to extend transversely across the tray at a point adjacent the body.
The clamping plate 17 is elongated, although it presents a comparatively broad structure and has upturned ears 18 formed thereon, which ears 18 are carried upon the strands 15 so as to cause the clamping plate 17 to be pivotally mounted upon the strands 15, whereby when the clamping frame moves to its normal position the clamping plate 17 may be slightly swung so as to accommodate. the position of the receipts as the plate first engages the same.
The slide 19 has a knob 20 formed thereon through which the strands 15 extend.
This slide 19 is pointed at its forward end 21 so as to permit the same to notch the paper or receipt as the same is being torn along the clamping plate 17. It is obvious that this slide 19 may be moved transversely across the tray of the receipt cutter since the knob 20 will permit the slide to slide along the upper surface of the plate 17 and upon the strands 15.
When this device is in use it will be seen that the clamping frame may be swung outwardly, as above set forth, so as to permit aY number of receipts which, of course, may be of any desired nature to be positioned'upon the tray and held against side displacement by the side flanges, the end flange, and the wall. Upon the release of the clamping frame the clamping plate 17 will be swung into engagement with the receipts 7 thus holding the receipts in their correct position upon the tray. The clamping plate and the slide will not in the least interfere with the filling out of the receipts for they will be carried adjacent the central portions of the receipts and not where it is necessary to ride upon the receipts. Furthermore, the positioning of the arms 13 upon the outer sides of the flange-s 2, as shown in Figs. 1, 2, and Ll will cause these arms to be positioned out of the way and not interfere with theiilling' out of the receipts. When it is desired to notch the marginal edge of a receipt indicating the amount of money received it `will be seen that the slide may be moved along `the strands 15 and over the upper surface of the clamping plate 17 to a desired position so that when the receipt is torn the pointed end 21 of the slide 19 will notch the receipt because of its V-shaped construction, thus preventing unauthorized tampering with the receipt or the raising of the same, since the amount received will be positively indicated upon the marginal edge thereof.
From the foregoing description it will Vbe seen that a very simple and efficient receipt cutter has been constructed .which is `so formed as to permit the same to beeasily carried in the pocket of a garment, while the construction will cause the receipts to be firmly held upon the tray without interference when the. receipt is being filled out, while the plate will notonly hold the receipts in position but will also facilitate the moving of the slide across the receipts without injuring the receipts, while the construction of the slide is such is to permit the receipts to be notched when lilled out.
It will further be seen that the basel is provided with a number of nger openings 1, as illustrated in dotted lines in Fig. l and also shown in Fig. 3. Thus, it will be seen that when it is desired to remove the receipts either in a one-piece condition or afterV being torn or separated, all that it is necessary to do is to insert a nger through either of the openings desired, thereby lifting the receipts from the tray. l
What is claimed is 1. In a receipt cutter of the class'described, the combination of a tray, said tray comprising a body, upstanding side flanges formed upon said body, a strip extending from said body and bent backwardly at a spaced distance and terminating in a depending wall tting upon saidbody, therebyA forming an inclosed housing, said tray being,
adapted to carry a number of receipts so as to cause said lianges and said wall to hold the receipts againstV side displacement, a clamping frame carried upon said tray, means carried within said housing vfor urging said clamping frame in kone direction,
and means carried by `said clamping frame for clamping upon the receipts carried by said tray and holding the same from move-i pending wall fitting upon said body, thereby forming an inclosedhousing, said tray bemg adapted to carry a number of receipts so as Yto cause said nanges and said wall to hold the receipts against side displacement, a clamping frame carried upon said tray, means carried within said housing for urging said clamping frame in one direction, means carried by said clamping frame for clamping upon the receipts vcarried by said tray and holding the same from movement from said tray whereby the receipts may be easily filled out, and means carried by said frame for notching the receipt iilled out along an edge thereof when desired.
3. In a receipt cutter of the class described, the combination of a tray, said tray comprising a body, side flanges formed upon said body, an end flange formed at one end of said body and engaging the ends of said side flanges, a housing formed upon the op posite end of said body and engaged by the ends of said side flanges, said tray being adapted to carry a number of receipts, a spindle carried within said housing, a coil spring carried upon said spindle and bearing upon the inner portion of said housing, whereby said spindle will be urged in one direction, blocks carried by said spindle and extending through the side flanges, side arms connected to said blocks, blocks carried upon the forward ends of said arms, a strand connected to said last-mentioned blocks, said side flanges being provided with alined notches, whereby said last-mentioned blocks will normally lit within said notches so as to permit said strands to be carried adjacent said body, a clamping plate carried upon v said ,strand and bearing u-pon the receipts carried by said tray for holding the same against accidental displacement, and means carried by said strand for permitting receipts to be notched along a marginal edge as the receipts are torn and the slide engages the same.
4. In .a receipt cutter of the class described, the combination of a tray, said tray comprising a body, side flanges formed upon said body, an end flange formed at one end of said body and engaging the ends of said side iianges, a housing formed upon the opposite end of said body and engaged by the ends of said side flanges, said tray being adapted to carry a number of receipts, a spindle carried within said housing, a coil spring carried upon said spindle and bearing upon the inner portion of said housing, whereby said spindle will be urged in one direction, blocks carried by said spindle and extending through said side flanges, side arms connected to said blocks, blocks carried upon the forward ends of said arms, a strand connected to said last-mentioned blocks, said side flanges being provided with alined notches, whereby said last-mentioned blocks will normally fit within said notches so as to permit said strand to be carried adjacent said body, a clamping plate carried upon said strand and bearing upon the receipts carried by said tray for holding the same against accidental displacement, and a slide adjustably mounted upon said strand, whereby said slide may move to an adjusted position so as to permit the receipts to be notched by said slide as the same are torn along said plate.
