Description

J. ABRAHAMS,
ATYTACHING DEVICE. APPLICATION FILED use. 30. I916- Patented Aug. 7, 1917.
JULIUS ABRAHAMS, OF PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA.
' ATTAGHING DEVICE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Aug. '7, 1917.
Application filed December 30, 1916. Serial No. 139,918.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JULIUS ABRAHAMS, a citizen of the United States, residing at Philadelphia, in the county of Philadelphia and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Attaching Devices, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in devices for attaching tags to packages and for analogous purposes.
The object of my invention is to provide an attaching device of novel, simple, inexpensive and eflicient construction; and to this end my invented device consists of the elements and the combinations of them hereinafter described and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings, illustrating my invention:
Figure l is a perspective view of a package having a tag attached thereto by means of my improved device.
Figs. 2 and 3 are plan andperspective views, respectively of my improved device before the bending of any of the tongues thereof.
Figs. 4, 5, 6 and 7 are views showing different stages of the device during the bending of the tongues to form the complete device shown in Figs. 1 and 7 Referring to the drawings, my attaching device comprises a body portion 2, a long tongue 8 extending from one end thereof, a
, short tongue 4 extending from the other end thereof and two short tongues 5 extending from the respective sides thereof, all formed of a single piece of sheet metal, as clearly shown in the drawings.
The long tongue of the device, as shown in Figs. 2 and 3, is bent upwardly as shown in Fig. 4 and then down upon the body portion 2 with the free end of the tongue over the body portion 2, as shown in Fig. 5. During or before one or both of these operations, the tongue 3 is passed beneath the cord 6 of the package 7 and through the hole in the tag 8 so that the cord 6 and the attached end of the tag 8 will be inclosed by the short loop formed by the bent tongue 3 and extending outwardly from the body portion 2. The
two side tongues 5 are then bent inwardly to lie over and inclose the free end portion of the long tongue 3 which is upon the body portion 2, as shownin Fig. 6. The tongue 4 is then bent inwardly to lie over the tongues 5, as shown in Fig. 7. If desired the tongue 4: may be bent inwardly before bending the tongues 5 inwardly. The purpose of the tongues 4L and 5 is to prevent upward or lateral displacement of the free end of the tongue 3 from the body portion 2 and thereby confine the cord 6 and the end portion of the tag 8 within the loop formed by the tongue 3 and thus attach the tag 8 to the package 7 The loop formed by the tongue 3 and inclosing the cord 6 and the end portion of the tag 8 is comparatively short and rigid and, as it extends back upon itself and into the confines of the cage formed by the body portion 2 and bent tongues 4: and 5, its own strength and rigidity will prevent its free end from being accidentally withdrawn from the said cage.
I claim:
1. An attaching device formed of a single piece of sheet metal and comprising a body portion, short tongues projecting from the respective sides of the body portion and bent over the same and forming a pocket therewith, and along tongue extending from one end of the body portion and bent upon itself forming an inclosing loop and extending therefrom back over the 'unction between the body portion and t e long tongue and into said pocket.
2. An attaching device formed of a single piece of sheet metal and comprising a body portion, short tongues projecting from the respective sides and from one end of the body portion and forming a pocket therewith, and a long tongue extending from the other end of the body portion and bent upon itself forming an inclosing loop and extending therefrom back over the junction between the body portion and the long tongue and into said pocket.
In testimony whereof I aflix my signature hereto.
JULIUS ,ABRAHAMS.
