Description

H. W. 'MCDNALU Lamp Bracket.A
HIRAM W. MODONALD, OF BUOYRUS, OHIO.
IMPROVEMENT IN LAMP-BRACKETS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 123,498, dated February 6, 1872.
Specification describing a certain Improvement in Lamp-Brackets, invented by HIRAM W'. MCDONALD, residing at Bucyrus, in the county ot' Oran-'tord and State of Ohio.
It is Well known that a great many accidents endangering the lives ot' people result from overturning coal-oil lamps and their consequent explosion. My invention is intended to provide against accidents of this nature by suspending the lamps in brackets fastened to the Wall or other tixed object instead ot' resting them upon tables; and to this end it consists in tbrming a bracket with a detachable spring throat-piece or collar for clasping the stem or pillar of an ordinary coaloil lamp between the foot and the bowl.
Figure l is a side elevation ot' my improved bracket carrying a lamp. Fig. 2 is a perspective view, showing the spring-collar detached from its socket on the end ot the bracket.
The same letters ot reference are used in both tgures in the designation of identical parts.
The device illustrated in the drawing consists ot' a long screw-bolt, A, which is to be screwed into awall, projecting therefrom a sutcient distance to keep the` lamp clear of the same, and a spring-collar, B, constructed with lianges for attachment to a slotted socket on the outer end ot the bolt. rlhis is the simplest form ofthe holder, for the screw-bolt of which a bracket of simple or ornamental form may be substituted; but the construction ot' the socket and spring-collar will always be substantially like that shown. The socket U 011 the outer end of the bolt or bracket A is adapted for the reception of the flanges b Z) on the spring-collar B, is open on top, but provided with a bottom for sustaining the flanges b b,
and is provided With a vertical slot, c, in its outer side, reaching from top to bottom. The sprin g-collar B is a circular strap ot' metal, having its ends, which nearly meet, folded back so as to form the flanges l) b. Each ange has a projectin g lug, b', which enters corresponding slots c c in the edge of the socket G, thus locking the collar to the socket so that they cannot be accidentally separated. The collars Will be made ot' different sizes to tit dil'erent lamppillars 5 but the tlanges b b of one size of collar Will be equal in dimensions to those of all other sizes, so that one socket Will tit every size collar. I
To attach a lamp to a holder or bracket, the spring-collar is drawn out ot' its socket to be sprung over the stem of the lamp, which done, its Han ges are again inserted in the socket, the neck of the collar passing down the slot in the latter.
W'hat I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
l. A device for suspending ordinary coal-oil lamps from walls, composed ot' a bracket or bolt, A, slotted socket C c fixed thereto, and the detachable lian ged spring-collar B b b, substantially as set forth.
2. The lugs b b on the spring-collar, in combination with corresponding slot-s c e of the socket, substantially as and for the purpose specified.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name hereto this 27th day of December, A. D. 1871, in the presence ot' two attestin g witnesses.
HIRAM WV. MGDONALD.
