Description

GEORGE W. SOULE.
Terret.
No.l123,368. PaentedFeb. 6,1872.
UNITEn STATES PATENT @Timon GEORGE W. SOUIIE, OF BUFFALO, NEW YORK, ASSIGNOR TO HIMSELF AND J OSIAH LETOHWORTH, OF SAME PLAGE.
IMPROVEMENT IN TERRETS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 123,368, dated February 6, 1872.
SPECIFICATION.
I, GEORGE W. SOULE, of the city of Buffalo, in the county of Erie and State of New York, have invented a certain Improved Terret, oi' which the following is a specification:
My improvement relates to that part of harness known as a terret or guide-ring through which the rein passes; and it consists of a terret cast with an arm, to which the hitchingstrap is attached, and which may also serve as a trace-carrier, as will be hereinafter fully eX- plained.
In the accompanying drawing, Figure I is a perspective View of my improved terret.
Ais the ring or terret proper, and a the arms formed therewith. These arms are preferably arranged on both sides of' the terret to give it a more symmetrical form and to facilitate its adjustment in the seat.
As the terrets are screwed in place it might happen, if only one arm was provided thereon, that the latter would beon the inside when the terret is screwed down against its seat, in which case a backward half revolution of the terret is required in order to bring the arm on the outside, which leaves the terret comparatively loose in its seat. When two arms are provided a quarter turn at most will only be necessary to adjust the terret.
In the drawing the terret is shown provided with arms projecting from the shank, which termina-te in a cross-piece, button, or other suitable device to retain the cock-eye in place after it has been engaged therewith. As these arms are seldom required to be used for the two purposes at the same time the hitching-strap can be attached thereto when the traces are connected to the whiftletree.
I claim as my invention- The terret A, provided with the arm al, substantially as and for the purpose hereinbefore set forth.
GEORGE W. SOULE.
