J. D.`TURBEV1LLE.
Y HAMES FOR HARNESS. No.18Z,497, Patented Sept.19,1876..
N,FETER3. PHofn-LITNUGRAPNER, wAsmrIGTON, n c,
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JOHN D. TUBBEVILLE, OF DRESDEN, TENNESSEE.
IMPROVEMENT IN HAMES FOR HARNESS.
Specication forming part of Letters Patent No. 182,497, dated September 19, 1876; application filed January 25, 1876.
To all whom t may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN D. TURBEVILLE,
` of Dresden, county of Weakley, inthe State of Tennessee, have invented an Improvement in Hannes for Harness,of which the following is a specication, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part hereof.
My invention consists in the combination, in a hame for harness, having a plate carrying ears or lugs through which a bolt is passed, secured upon the front of the hame on the lower part thereof, and extending from the lower extremity to somewhat above the middle of the hame, of a plate carrying eyes, secured upon the side of the hame at the upper end thereof, and extending from the point where the lower front plate terminates to the top of the hame, whereby, while the draft is made capable of adjustment to any size of horse, and the hame-strap may be adjusted either higher or lower without being unfastened, the llame itself may be made of light wood, and still possess the strength throughout, at all points where strain. is felt, of a metal hame.
Figure l is a side elevation, and Fig. 2 is a front elevation, of a hame embodying my inl vention.
In my hame, as shown, a plate, A, is secured upon the front of the wooden hame B, extendfrom the lower extremity of the hame to some,
what above the middle thereof. This plate carries the lugs or ears a, having openings, as shown, through which is passed a bolt. By this means the draft is made adjustable. This plate and ,its lugs I make of metal, and, preferably, cast them in one piece, of iron. A plate, O, cast in the same manner, carrying the eyes b, which are formed, as shown, with an opening in their sides to receive the hamestrap,)'l place upon the side or edge of the hame, extending from the point where the lowerl plate A terminates to the upper extremity of the hame B.
By means of these eyes the hame-strap may be adjusted either higher or lower without unbuckling it.
Now, it is evident that the plates A and O will give to the hame great strength throughout, and that, while the hame B may be made of light wood, the parts Vsustaining a strain will be as strong as in an entirely metal hame, while the whole hame will be lighter, and less burdensome to the animal; and by the combination of the plates, constructed as I have described them, the hame is adapted to any-sized animal, and is readily adjustable without unbuckling or detaching any of the straps.
I do not claim, broadly, a hame having lugs or ears provided with a bolt set on the front of the hame, whereby the draft is made adjustable; neither do I claim, broadly, said ears or lugs, when cast in a plate which is secured on the front of the hame.
What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The wooden hame `B, having the metal plate A, carrying the lugs a, and secured upon the front Yof the hame, extending from the lower extremity to somewhat above the middle thereof,'and the metal plate C, carrying the slotted hame-strap eyes b, secured upon the edge of the hame, and extending from the point where the lower plate terminates to the upper extremity of the hame, as described, and for the pprpose specified.
