INVENTOR WITNESSES ATTORN EY HELENE HGEHN, OF WILLIAMSVILLE, NEW YORK.
GARMENT.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented July to, 191%.
. Application filed December 22, 1916. Serial No. 138,443.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HELENE HonriN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Williamsville, in the county of Erie and State of New York, have invented new and useful Improvements in Garments, of which g the following is a specification.
The present invention relates to wearing apparel and is particularly directed to womens outer garments. 4
In carrying out the invention it is my object to produce an outer garment for women such a dress which will conform itsell to the figure oi the wearer so that sloch garments of a determined length may be sold to various purchasers having i lil'l'erent bust, hip and waist n1CHSlIIOI'IlQIllES and wherein the said garment may, without alterations,
be arranged to properly fit the various models.
It is a further object oi the invention to produce a one-piece dress wherein the back thereof is provided with spaced plaits en'- tonding from the shoulder to below the hip lines,,prodncing a panel between the plaits and to provide a belt member comprising two independent sections which cross themselves upon the inner side and at the center of the panel, the ends of the said members being connected to o adjacent to the respwtivc plaits, means being also provided for connecting the ends of the belt members, and the material of the dress being adapted to be gathered or tucked beneath the plaits, whereby the dress may, in this manner. be readily brougl'it to litdill'erently proper-- tioned women.
It a still further object oi the invlmlion to produce a wearing apparel for women that is sel'li-ailjustablc or sel'li-litting with regard to the hip, bustand waistline measnrements which shall be artistic in appearance, comparatiwily cheap to manu'l'm-tm'c and which shall be of an extremely simple construction.
With the above and other objects in view the improvement resides in the col1struction combii'iation and arrangement of parts set forth in the 'l'ollowing s 'ieeiliazation and falling within the scope of the appended claims.
In the drawing:
Figure l is a view illustrating the improvement and lookin toward the front thereof,
Fig. 2 is a similar view but illustrating the dress adjusted to a stout figure,
Fig. 3 is a rear elevation of Fig. 1,
Fig. 4 is a rear elevation cl Fig. one of the sections of the belt being unfastcued,
Fig. 5 a sectional view approximalicl y on the line 55 of Fig. 1,
Fig. (3 is an enlarged elevation of a fragment of the inner portion of the dress at the belt line thereof,
Fig.7 is a sectional perspective view illustrating the manner in which the ends of the belt sections are connected and. the manner in which the same are closed, and
Fig. 8 is a detail elevation oi? the strap As illustrated by the drawings, the gas ment jl is of the one-piece type and is provided with an open. front.
The back of he garment from points adjacent to the sleeve thereof, to points below the hip line is plaited, as at 52, the folds provided by the plaits being slit/shed, as illustrated in the drawings, so that the bacl; oi the garn'icnt, between the said plaits is provided. with a panel 3.
The panel 3, at lhc 'aisl-line oi the garment is preferably provided with a strap a; which adds lo the ornamcnlality oi the garment, and the dress, at the :l'olds l, thereof, inward oi the panel 3 is providral with spaced openings S 5, the said openings being concealed by lhe plaits :5, even when the said folds 1' ol' the dress are brought a considerable distance away from each other, as when the dress is worn by stout figures. The said strap is provided \vilh openings 5, the said openings being; concealed by tin: overlapping plaits Z.
Passing through the openings 5 are the bifurcated ends li---l.i o'l belt sections 7 and 8, the said bi'l'urralcd ends being sccpred lo the bar-l; of lhe dress, as clearly illustrated in Figs. 5 and 7 ol' the drawings.
The belt members pass through the re icrrcd to openings and each ol the said belt members or sections at its outer or free end is provided wilh a butlon-hole 9.
lhc numeral 10 designates a strap or connecting member for the ends oil the belt sections, the same prcl'erably having its outer face adjacent its ends provided with loops 11 through which. the ends oi the belt members pass and the said outer face is fun thcr provided with a plurality of spaced -of the wearer the material adjacent to the plaits may be folded and tucked beneath the plaits so that the dress can accommodate itself to a comparatively slight figure, while, of course, less folds are necessary for larger figures. In any event all of the folds are wholly concealed and from the above description when taken in connection with the ack of the dress to the drawings, it will be noted-that the dress may be arranged to conform to the bust, hip and waist measurements of various figures.
While the improvement has been illustrated and described as an outer garment for women, it is to be understood that the same is not to be thus restricted in its useful application as the same may be employed with equal efliciency upon underwear, undergarments, petticoats, shirts, waists, coats, caps, bonnets, etc.
Having thus described the invention, what claim is:
1. An outer garment for women having a plaited back providing a panel between the laits, and adjustable means secured to the opposite sides of the plaits and crossing each other and arranged around the waist of the garment, as and for the purpose set forth.
2. A garment for women comprising an open front and having a panel at the back thereof extending from the shoulder to below the hip line of the garment, belt members at the waistline of the garment passing through openings in the back of the dress to the opposite sides of the panel and connected to said dress, and adjustable securing means for the belt members.
3. A dress for women having an open front and havin its back provided with a pair of spaced p aits providing between the same a panel which extends from the shoulder to the hip line of the dress, the dress at the folds thereof to the rear of the plaited portions having openings at the waistline thereof, a beltmember passing through each of the openings and having an inner bifurcated end, the said bifurcated ends of the belt members straddling each other and being secured to the back of the dress to the rear of the plaits, and means for connecting the ends of the belt members whereby to permit of portions of the garment being tucked beneath the plaits, as and for the purpose set forth.
In testimony whereof I afiix my signature.
