DOOR-HANGER.
Application filed January 8, 1915.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, Fnnnnnron A. Lus- TER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in a Door-Hanger, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part hereof.
My invention relates generally to door hangers, and has especial reference to an improved type of roller hanger which is adapted more particularly for use in connection with railway car doors.
The invention has for its principal object to produce a device of this character wherein friction is reduced to minimum during the movement of the door along the track to either of its limiting positions. Another object of the invention is the provision of a simple and efficient hanger and track therefor which can be easily made and applied to the door and car at a minimum of cost.
These, together with such other objects as may hereinafter appear, or are incident to my invention, I attain by means of a construction illustrated in preferred form in the accompanying drawings, wherein Figure 1 is a sectional view of a preferred form of my improved device, illustrating its application to the door and its relation with the door track;
Fig. 2 represents a rear face view of the device; and r Fig. 3 is a section taken centrally through the hood portion of the device shown in Fig. 1.
Like numerals of reference indicate corresponding parts in each figure.
Referring to the drawings, the numeral 4 indicates the door suspended by means of the hanger for travel along the angle bar guide track 5 which is secured to the car frame 6. A fragmentary portion only of the door is shown, as the relation of the door to the door opening and car frame, and
the customary number of hangers used is well known to those skilled in this art. The hanger roper comprises the lower bracket portion% and hood 8, the latter being provided with suitable bolt holes 10 designed for the reception of the bolts 10 which secure the hanger to the door as in the manner shown in Fig. 1.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented July 10, 1917.
Serial No. 1,063.
The principal aim of my invention is to facilitate door movement by reducing toa minimum, the friction usually encountered between the door hanger and its track. With this end in view, the hood 8 preferably is of a box-like conformation having front and rear wall portions 11 and 12 connected by the top wall 13 and side walls 141, 14c, and provided with an open bottom through which the two spaced rollers 15, 15, are inserted for positioning in the hood. Both front and rear walls are formed with alined bearings to receive the spindles of the rollers, the rear wall 12 being desirably provided with open ended or slotted bearings so as to facilitate the placing of the rollers in the hood.
As shown in Fig. 1, the track 6 has an outwardly projecting horizontal leg 16 extending outwardly over the door 9, and inserted between it and the spaced rollers, and in a contactual relation therewith, is an antifriction ball 17 designed to travel, when motion is imparted to the door, along the leg 16 and thereby impart rotary movement to the rollers during its said travel. To retain the ball in operative relation with the rollers, the track leg 16 is formed with a marinal flange 16, preferably curved to conorm with the shape of the ball, and at the opposite side of the ball the rear wall 12 depends sufiiciently so as to prevent any displacement of the same. The ends of the tracks may be closed by ribs 16', which extend transversely of the leg 16 between the flange 16 and the attaching flange of the track.
To cover in and protect the hood, I provide the track beam 18 and fascia 19 disposed respectively adjacent the top wall 13 and front wall 11 of the hood. When the several parts are thus positioned, the top edge 9 of the door, serves to maintain the hanger on the track against displacement from shock, as will be readily apparent.
From the foregoing description, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, the construction and operation of the invention will be readily understood without requiring a more extended explanation.
Having thus described my invention and illustrated its use, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is the following In combination, a guide track marginally formed with a guiding lip and an inner track face disposed below and merging with said lip, a ball adapted to travel along said inner track face within the limits imposed by the said marginal guiding lip, said lip constructed to have a retaining engagement with the side of the ball, a door hanger hood having bearings and an open under face, and a pair of anti-friction rollers insertible 10 through said open under face into said bearings in a contactual relation with adjacent upper portions of said ball.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto signed my name in the presence of the two subscribed witnesses.
FREDERICK A. LESTER.
