Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Dec. 2, 190
Application filed May 22, 1905. Serial No. 261,575..
To cLZZ whom it may-concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN J .TATUM, a citizen of the United States, residing at Baltimore city, State of Maryland, have invented new and useful Improvements in Door- Hangers, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to an improvement in door-hangers, the object being to provide asimple and substantial construction of few parts not likely to become broken or to get out of place; and with the foregoing object in view it consists in certain novel features of construction and combinations of .parts, which will be hereinafter described, and pointed out in the claim.
In the accompanying drawings, Fi ure 1 is a section through a portion of a building, a
door, and hanger. Fig. 2 is a similar broken view of a modification. Fig. 3 is an inside view of the upper portion of the hangercasting. Fig. 4 is a side elevation showing the door mounted on a rail, and Figs. 5, 6, and 7 are modifications.
A represents a portion of a building, and 1 represents the rail, which in Figs. 1 and 2 is Z- shaped in cross-section, the outer flange in Fig. 1 projecting upwardly and in Fig. 2 downwardly. In Figs. 5, 6, and 7 this rail is shown in slightly different forms, in Fig. 5 the flanges at both ends of the rail extending upwardly, in Fig. 6 the flanges being double- T shape at opposite ends of the rail and in Fig. 7 L-shaped, with a slight depression 2 therein. Other slight variations might of course be made in the rail besides those illustrated, the rail bein held in place by a bolt 3, passed through the inner flange and the frame of the building.
B indicates the hanger-plate, (shown in detail in Fig. 3,) it being in the form of a casting of malleable iron or other metal with bearing -lugs 4 and 5 cast integral therewith, these bearing-lugs preferably formed on two or three, preferably three, diflerent diameters, as shown at a, b, and c. Rollers C C are counterbored on two different bores, as shown in the sectional views of the drawings at b c, to fit the bearings 12 and 0, respectively, whereby an extended bearing is formed for these rollers throughout their thicknesses, so that the possibility of the slightest twisting or lateral play is precluded. Bolts or rivets D D extend through holes in the bearings provided for them, and washers 6 6 on the inner ends of the bearings retain the rollers in position and at the same time permit slight endwise play and freedom of movement.
One roller travels on the track, and the other is immediatelybeneath it and by means of the two and the outer flange of the rail the door is prevented from jumping the track or being removed either accidentally or intentionally while the parts are assembled, and in this Way accidents and difficulties of all sorts are prevented.
Protecting-roof E, of sheet metal, projects over the hangers and rails to keep out water, snow, dust, &c., and to prevent ice being formed or accumulating.
Slight additional changes might be resorted to in the form and arrangement of the several parts described without departing from the spirit and scope of my invention, and hence I do not wish to limit myself to the exact construction herein set forth; but,
Having fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
In a door-hanger, the combination with a rail, of a hanger adapted to be secured to the door and comprising a plate having bearings cast thereon having two or more diameters, rollers fitted thereto and means for retaining the rollers on the bearings, one above and the other beneath the rail.
In testimony whereof I aiflx my signature in presence of two subscribing witnesses.
JOHN J. TATUM.
