Description
w.'A. HELMKAMPK DRINKING FOUNTAIN APPLICATION HLED' OCT. 2. I916.
Patented J 1115 10, 1917.
WILLIHM HELMKHMF IINITE WILLIAM A. HELMKAMP, or RIVER GROVE, ILLInoIs.
DRINKING-FOUNTAIN.
Application filed October 2, 1916.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, WVILLIAM A. HELM- RAMP, a citizen of the United States, residing at River Grove, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Drinking- Fountains, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings.
This invention comprehends certain new and useful improvements in drinking fountains, and it has for its primary object a practical, durable and eflicient construction of device of this character which may be readily attached to an ordinary pump spout or the like, whereby the device will be found of especial advantage for use in country and other schools, and will provide a very hygienic and sanitary means whereby the scholars may drink with safety and without the use of the unsanitary drinking utensils commonly employed.
A further object of the invention is a device of this character, the parts of which are so constructed and arranged that they may be very easily manufactured and so formed that the water may be caused to flow up through the fountain for drinking pur poses, or down out of the device so that buckets or similar receptacles may be easily filled, or the water used for purposes other than drinking, without the necessity of detaching the fountain.
And the invention also aims to generally improve devices of this class so as to render them more useful and commercially desirable.
Vith these and other objects in view, as will more fully appear as the description 1 proceeds, the invention consists in certain constructions, arrangements and combinations of the parts that I shall hereinafter more fully describe and claim.
For a full understanding of the invention, reference is to be had to the following description and accompanying drawing, in which Figure l is a side elevation of a drinking fountain constructed in accordance with my invention.

to in the following description and accompanying drawing by like reference characters.
In carrying out my invention, I secure in any desired way, but in a preferably detachable manner, to the ordinary pump spout or the like, an elbow 2, said elbow being provided at its bend with a turn cook or valve 3. The turn cook or valve 3 has disposed therethrough the straight port 3* positioned at one side of the axial center of the cook or valve whereby the water may be caused to flow upwardly through the elbow, or downwardly and directly out through and from a nipple i with which the elbow is formed, as clearly illustrated in the drawing.
The elbow 2 is also provided with an upwardly projecting reducing end 5 to which the lower end of a vertically disposed pipe 6 is connected in any desired way and surrounding the pipe 6 is a bowl 7, in which the tube 8 is mounted, said tube being provided at its upper end with the usual rose or bubble device 9. Preferably, the bowl 7 is formed at substantially its axial center with interior screw threads 10, and the pipe 6 has its upper end screwed into the threads 10 and the tube 8 has its lower screw-threaded end engaged also with said threads by being inserted down into the bowl 7, the adjoining ends of the pipe and tube abut-ting, as shown.
The bowl 7 adjacent a side thereof, is formed with a downwardly projecting nipple 11, said nipple being interiorly screwthreaded, as illustrated, for engagement with the upper screw-threaded end of a drain pipe 12, the lower end of said pipe being inserted through and held by a loop or eye 2 carried by the elbow 2. As is particularly illustrated in Fig. 2 it is to be noted that the nipple 11 is arranged at the lowermost portion of the interior of the bowl and that the inner face of said bowl is inclined thereto so that the passing of all of the water within the bowl through the pipe 12 is assured and whereby the possibility of the discharge through said pipe being obstructed by ice is substantially entirely eliminated.
From the foregoing description, in connection with the accompanying drawing, the peration of my improved drinking fountain will be apparent. In the practical use of the device, when the parts are connected together in the manner hereinbefore described, it is obvious that by turning the valve 3 to one position, the water from the pump may be caused to flow upwardly through and from the elbow 2 and out of the rose or bubble device 9, so that the scholars may drink freely and without danger of contamination or infection. VVhenever desired, the valve 3 may be so turned that the water will flow directly out from the elbow 2 through the nipple l, as for example, when it is desired to fill a pail or other receptacle or when the water is de sired for other purposes than drinking.
Vhile the accompanying drawing illustrates what I. believe to be the preferred embodiment of my invention, it is to be understood that the invention is not limited thereto but that various changes may be made in the construction, arrangements and proportions of the parts without departing from the scope of the invention as claimed.
What is claimed, is: A device of the character described, comprising a vertically disposed elbow provided with an upwardly projecting reducing end and with a nipple below said end, a valve carried by the bend of said elbow and controlling the passage of water through the nipple and reducing end, said valve being provided with a substantially straight port disposed therethrough and positioned at one side of the axial center of the valve, a pipe connected to said reducing end and projecting upwardly therefrom, a bowl formed substantially at its axial center With interior screw threads engaged by the upper end of said pipe, and a bubble tube mounted in said bowl and screwed in said threads, said bubble tube being separate from the pipe and capable of removal independently of the pipe.
In testimony whereof I hereunto affix my signature in the presence of two Witnesses.
