COMBINED DRINKING-FOUNTAIN AND ATTACHMENT FOR FAUCETS.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed October 7,1912. Serial No. 724,444.
" of Iowa, have invented a new and useful Combined Drinking-Fountain and Attachment for Faucets, of which the following is a specification.
The object of my invention is to provide a combined drinking fountain and attach ment for faucets of that general class of devices in which the water is made to spout a short. distance above the fountain for drinkvice so constructed that by the rotation of the fountain the water may be caused to pass upwardly through the fountain or to pass downwardly through a spout or the like at the will of the operator.
A further object is to provide such a device so constructed and arranged that it may be adjusted so that the size of the stream when directed throu h the fountain or through the spout may be regulated to suit the desire of the operator.
A further object is to provide such a device so constructed that the force of the stream between the supply pipe and the discharge points of the fountain or spout, will be broken and the water will be discharged in a steady even stream.
My invention consists in certain details the construction,arrangement and combination of the various parts of the device, whereby the objects contemplated are attained, as hereinafter set forth, pointed out in my claims and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 shows a side elevation of a combined drinking fountain and attachment for faucets embodying my invention. Fig. 2 shows a central, vertical, sectional view of the same. Fig. 3 shows a horizontal sec tional view through my device taken on theline 3-3 of F ig. 2. Fig. 4 shows an invert ed plan view 0 the same.
In the accompanying drawings I have used the reference numeral 10 to indicate a support or shelf on which is mounted a fixture ll-which may be of any desired form provided with an ordinary valve 12 con trolled by a handle 13. The fixture 11 is hollow and is designed to communicate with the water pipe. Extending laterally from the fixture 11 is a tube 14; which is internally.

My improved combined drinking fountain and attachment for faucets is described as follows: I
A tube 15 is provided at one end with eitternal screw threads designed to be received within a tube 14. Formed on the free end of the tube 15 is a body 16 having a vertical opening in the form of a frustum of a hollow cone into which the tube 15 opens. Mounted in the body 16 is a body 17 having the shape of a frustum of a cone and designed to fit snugly within said body. The interior\ of the body 16 and the exterior of the body 17 are preferably ground to furnish smooth surfaces and a water tight joint. In the lower end of body 17 is a vertical opening 18 which at is upper end is inclined toward and to the side of the body 18 at a oint preferably below the level of the opening into the tube 15. The side of the body 17 is cut away or flattened at .17 from a point even with the opening into the opening 18, to a point on alevel with the opening into the tube 15.
Formed on the upper end of the body 17 is'a cup of a drinking fountain having in its center a raised portion 20 and in its bottom a plurality of openings 21 throu h which water may be discharged. The body 17 preferably on the side opposite the fiattened portion 17 is flattened at 22 from a point on a level with the opening in the tube 15 to a point above same. In the body 17, the cup 19, and the extension 20 is a vertical opening 30 which is open at its top and extends to'a point below the level of the upper part of the flattened portion 22. A passageway 31 leads from the upper end of the flattened portion 22 downwardly to the passageway 30 communicating with the latter at a point above the bottom thereof.
A portion of the lower end of the body 16 is cut away forming shoulders 24 On opposite sides thereof, and in the body 17 I secure a screw 25 or the like designed toengage the shoulders 24 and to limit the rotary movement of the body 17 in the body 16. The shoulders 24 andthe screw 25 are so located that when the screw 25 is against one of the shoulders 24:, the upper end of the flattened portion 17' registers with the opening into the tube 15, and when the body 17 is rotated until the screw is against the other shoulder 24 the flattened port-ion 22 registers with the opening into the tube 15.
In the practical installation and operation of my improved combined drinking livered to the drinking fountain regardless V of the fiat places 17 fountain and attachment for faucets, the screw threaded end of the tube 15 is screwed into the tube 14:, the body 17 is placed in the body 16 and the screw 25 is placed inposition. By rotating the body 17 until the screw 25 is against one of the shoulders 24, the said body 17 is moved to position where the upper end of the fiat portion 17 registers with the opening in the tube 15, and water may be permitted to flow down wardly into a pail, washbowl or the like. By rotating the said body 17 for a short distance, the opening into the. tube 15 is closed by the body 17. If the rotation is continued, the lower end of the fiat portion 22 may be moved to register with the open end of the tube 15 and a certain limited amount of water willfiow upwardly through the passageway 30 to the drinking fountain. Another slight turn'will cause the flat portion 22 to register more fully with the opening in the tube 15, and (the amount of water delivered to the drinking fountain may thus be increased. Any, surplus of water in the drinking cup is discharged through the openings 21. The size and force ofthe streamof water delivered to thetube 15 may vary greatly on account of variation in water pressure, but the size of the stream delivered to the fountain or the spout may be accurately regulated by rotation of the body 17.
. My improved combined. drinking fountain and attachment for faucets has 'many advantages. The ordinary drinking fountains cannot in most instances be used to discharge water from below. nor can they be regulated to control the stream dis-- charged into the fountain cup. My device may be installed as hereinafter described, and may be used as an ordinary faucet with the valve 12 left open at all times. The use and 22 enables each individual who uses the drinking fountain to regulate the stream of water to suit himself. llhe water passes between two ground or finely smoothed surfaces and the user is enabled to control the stream of Water dc of variations water pressure.
A great difficulty. in fountains of this class is found in the tendency of the water in the fountaln to spurt. By the arrangement 10f the passageways 30, 31, and the flat portion 1 have found that the water is delivered in a steady even stream. By
' extending the passageway 30 below the opening into the passageway 31, the water in the lower end of the passageway 31 forms a cushion which helps to secure an even flow to the fountain. 7

communicating with" the opening in said tube, a second body mounted in said cup having the form of a fru'stum of a cone, a drinkingfountain cup formed on the upper end of said second body, said cup and second body being provided with a. passageway extending from the interior of the cup downwardly to the level of said tube, and with a passageway inclined from the one side of the second body downwardly to said first passageway above the bottom thereof, leaving a. pocket in the bottom of the first passageway, and with another passageway from the side opposite the second passageway to the lower end'of the second body, said first body being formed with flattened portions on opposite sides which= ex tend respectively from the upper end of said second passageway to a, point on a level with said tube and from the upper end of said third passageway to a point on a level with said-tube, a portion of the first body being cut away and forming shoulders on opposite sides of saidbody, and a screw in said second body designed to engage the respective shoulders when the respective flattened portions are opposite the opening into said tube.
