tlNlTE %ZATE% PATENT STEVEN SCHWARTZ, OF CLEVELAND, OHIO, ASSIGNOR, BY MESNE ASSIGNMENTS, TO LOUIS F. SCHROEDER, OF CLEVELAND, OHIO.
FOUNTAIN-FAUCET.
ii,i27,683.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Feb. 9, 1915.
Application filed January 26, 1912, Serial No. 673,650. Renewed JuTy 3, 1914. Serial No. 848,945.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that l, STEVEN SCHWARTZ, a citizen of the United States, residing at Cleveland, in the county of Uuyahoga and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful improvements in Fountain- Faucets, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to, improvements in fountain or drinking faucets, and more particularly to improvements on my fountain faucet disclosed and claimed in my application iiled January 28, 1911, Serial No. 60 l,040, the primary object of the invention eeing to provide a generally improved sanitary drinking faucet of improved construction, particularly designed and adapted for use in lieu of the ordinary faucet whereby the necessity for the provision of a drinking cup may be dispensed with.
A further object of the invention is to provide a combined fountain and filtering faucet having its fountain cup or spout rotatably mounted whereby the same is adapted in its normal or depending position for use as an ordinary filtering faucet, and when it is desired to use the same as a drinking fountain, the rotatably mounted fountain cup may be turned to a reverse or upstanding vertical position thus directing the CllS-- charging stream upwardly in fountain form.
A still further object is to provide an improved regulating valve for use in connection with the fountain discharge port whereby the fountain stream issuing from the drinking fountain in its vertical position may be regulated in accordance with the varying water pressure in the source of fountain supply.
lVith the above mentioned and other ends in view, the invention consists in the novel construction, arrangement. and combination of parts, hereinafter described, illustrated in one of its embodiments in the accompanying drawings, and particularly pointed out in the appended claims.
Referring to the drawings forming a part of this specification, Figure 1, is a side elevation of the improved faucet supply or valve head, the fountain cup or spout being shown in section for the purpose of clearer illustration of the parts. Fig. 2, a top plan view of the same. Fig. 3, a central longitudinal sectional view taken through the fountain and filtering cu s, the sleeve head being shown in front elevation. Fig. 4, a top plan view of the supply or valve head and the valved fountain discharge port, the sleeve head of the fountain cup being shown in section.
Similar numerals of reference designate like parts throughout all the figures of the drawings.
The improved fountain or drinking faucet comprises a valve stem or pipe 1, terminating in a supply or valve head l provided with oppositely disposed ports 2, and 3, the port 2, comprising the main discharge port for use when the improved faucet is used as an ordinary filtering faucet in the position shown in the drawings. and the port 3, comprising the fountain discharge port adapted to communicate with the inlet port of the fountain cup when the latter is in its vertical position for use as a fountain faucet. As a means for regulating the height and form of the fountain stream in accordance with the water pressure. said fountain discharge port is internallv threaded to receive and contain a threaded screw valve 4, said screw valve being longitud inallv split by means of a central slit 4, adapted to form oppositely disposed communicating ports adapted to communicate with the inlet port of the fountain cup in regulating the flow of water therethrough. As a means for adjusting the screw valve 4. and conseouentlv regulating the size of the oppositely disposed communicating ports provided by the slit 4. said screw valve 4, in the present instance, is provided with an ordinary screw head 4 adapted to operate in an enlarged or countersunk opening 3 of the fountain discharge port 3.
The fountain cup. proper. 5, has a reduced internally threaded portion 5 threaded upon an externally threaded portion of the cup stem 5". said cup stem terminating in a slee e head 5. the latter being provided with an inlet port 5 adapted to communicate with the respective ports 2 and 3. when the rotatably mo nted cup is moved to its respective positions.
As a means for forming a proper connection or fit between the supply or valve head 1 and the sleeve head 5. the former is preferably tapered to fit within the correspondingly flared bearing opening of the sleeve head, and as a means for adjusting and retaining said sleeve head 5, upon the tapered supply or valve head 1, the latter is provided with a thread stud 1, adapted to receive a washer 6, and an adjusting nut,
lhe cup stem 5', is extended to form a strainer cup 8, extending into and spaced from the cylindrical Walls of the fountain cup 5, and provided with an enlarged strainer chamber communicating with the inlet, port 5, and provided with perforations or openings 8 in its cylindrical side walls. The strainer chamber 6, is adapted to receive and contain suitable strainer material 9, such as fine wire gauze as shown, or the like, and if desired, may be filled with suitable filtering material. As a. means for removably retaining said filtering or straining material within the filtering or strainer chamber, the strainer cup is provided with a threaded thumb cap 10, threaded to the lower or outer end of the perforated strainer cup and above the central discharge opening 5 of the fountain cup.
As a convenience in operating the faucet in connection with the improved rotatably mounted fountain cup, the faucet spindle and handle 11, and bonnet portion 12, of the faucet body or pipe 1, are preferably arranged at one side thereof as shown instead of on top as usual in the ordinary commonly employed faucet.
From the foregoing description, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, the operation and advantages of my invention will be readily understood.
Having thus described one of the embodiments of my invention, what I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent is,-
1. A fountain faucet, comprising a supply head provided with oppositely disposed ports one of which is provided with a regulatingvalve, and a fountain cup rotatably mounted over said ports and regulating valve.
2. In a fountain faucet, a supply head aving a main discharge port and a fountain discharge port, a regulating valve mounted in said fountain discharge port, and a fountain cup rotatably mounted on said supply head and covering said regulating valve.
3. In a fountain faucet, the combination with a supply head provided with avalved fountain discharge port; of a fountain cup rotatably mounted on said supply head and covering said valved fountain discharge port and adapted to be brought into and out of communication therewith.
4:.ln a fountain faucet, a supply pipe having a valve head provided with oppositely disposed ports one of which is threaded. a screw valve ad ustably mounted in said threaded port, and a fountain cup having a flaring sleeve rotatably mounted on said valve head and having an inlet port adapted to be brought into and out of registry with said oppositely disposed ports of said valve head.
in testimony whereof I have afiixed my signature in presence of two witnesses.
