IMPROVEMENT IN LANTERNS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 122,208, dated January 30, 1872.
My invention relates to that class of hand-lanterns known as removable-globe lanterns; and it consists in a novel construction of the band C C and a novel mode of attaching the vertical wires B B, which are a portion of the guardwires, to the band C C, through which the globe passes in the operation of its removal from the lantern.
Description of the Drawiny.
Figure 1 represents a vertical sectional view of what is known as an open-top lantern, showing my band C C and tip E; and Fig. 2 represents aside elevation of an open-bottom lantern, showing my band C C and tip E, as there applied and Fig. 3 represents a detached view of my tip E for fastening the guard-wires B B to the band C C in the form in which itis cut from the metal; and Fig. 4 represents a transverse sectional view of my band C C, with a modified form of my tip E attached thereto when the band is bent in a circular form, and showin g the guard-wires B B when fastened in their places by the tip; and Fig. 5 represents aside elevation of the same parts when attached, be fore they are bent in a circular form, the guardwires B B excepted; and Fig. 6 represents a side elevation of another modification of my tipE.
General Description.
Arepresents any ordinary base of a hand-lantern, made in any of the known forms, with the oil-fountain secured therein in any desirarable manner. B B are the upright guardwires in Fig. 1, in the usual form for an opentop lantern; and in Fig. 2 in the usual form for an open-bottom lantern. C is my new band, made of metal, and it is sufficientl y large in diameter for the globe to pass through it. When the band C is made of sheet metal it is turned upon one edge so thata flange is formed, upon which the ends of the guard-wires B B may rest in an open-bottom lantern, and which rests upon the ends of said guard-wires in opentoplanterns, by means of which tlange I am also enabled to securely and easily fasten said band to the top or base, respectively, of each kind oflanterns. In Fig. 3 the dotted iines represent cuts through the metal of my tip, forming what may be termed the leaves of mytip, where made in this form. In orderto fasten the upright guardwires B B to the band 0, the tip is placedin its proper place upon the band, so that its leaves may be turned around the ends of the upright guard-wires, and so that it will rest against the flange ot'the band 0 as well as the side of said band. The leaves of the tips being turned around the ends of the upright guard-wires, the tip is then soldered to the band, and the guardwires mentioned are solderedto the tip and to the band. It will-be observed that I am able, by this means, to fasten the upright guardwires very firmly to the band. The modification of my tip may be described as follows: It is evident that the use of the tip already described would require as mauy separate tips for the purpose intended as there are upright guavrdavires, while Fig. 6 represents my continuous tip, with the leaves of the tip cut through projections left at proper intervals upon the edge thereof, as shown, and this constitutes one of the modified forms of my tip. Anothermodification of my tip is represented in Fig. 5. The tip there shown having neither projections nor leaves it may be termed a straight and continuous tip. This tip is represented in Fig. 6 as being in its place upon the band cin opentop lanterns, and it is made to conform as near 1y as maybe to the ends of the upright guardwires B B, as shown at F F in Figs. 4 and 5. The band a is also shown at D D, in Fig. 4, as half-encircling the ends of the guards B B.
Having described the nature and construction of my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The combination of the band C and tip E, when constructed as and for the purposes specified and shown.
