UNITED STATES PATENT OEEIGE.
I IMPROVEMENT IN OVERSHOES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 123,162, dated January 30, 1872.
Speciiication describing new and Improved Overshoes, invented by JOHN EVANS, of New Brunswick, in the county of Middlesex and State oi' New Jersey.
My invention consists cfa cloth top and Indiarubber bottom overshoe having a yoke of elastic India-rubber lined cloth inserted in place of a portion of the instep at the upper part removed, for stretchingg,` to allow the shoe to be put on, and contracting again to keep it snug and tight, the object beingl to dispense with the elastic gores heretofore used, which are objectionable, as it is only a small portion of the upper part of the shoe top thatisrequircd to stretch to put on the shoe, while the gores extend to the bottom and take much more of the elastic cloth than is needed, and they are not so easy on the foot, for the latter is subject to the contracting power of two' pieces or' the elastic cloth; whereas I use but one and have the same length of cloth to stretch as when the gores are used, for Imay extend my yokes as far along the top as I please.
The drawing is a perspective view of a shoe with a yoke of elastic cloth applied to the instep according to my improvement.
A is the cloth part of the upper, and B the elastic cloth iitted in the upper edge of A at the instep. Said yoke of elastic cloth is made A wide-say an inch or there-about, at the center of the instep, as necessary to allow of putting it on sutici en tly easy, but varying accordin g to the height of the shoe, and extends alongl the top at each side toward the heel onethird of the way, more or less, gradually tapering up to the top of the shoe, and is secured in any way preferred.
This yoke is preferable to the gores in that it is exactly in that part of the shoe that is required to stretch when putting,` it on or taking it oft' or by the action of the feet in walk ing. The shoe is therefore more symmetrical and natural than when the gores are used, and the stretching is at the sides.
Having` thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- The improved manufacture, consisting of cloth-top overshoes with an elastic yoke B in the instep, substantially as specilied.
The` above specification of my invention signed by me this 21st day of November, 1871.
` JOHN EVANS.
