MICHAEL POPOVICI-I, OF FLINT, MICHIGAN.
DETACHABLE HEEL FOR BOOTS AND SHOES.
Specicaton of Letters Patent.
Patented June 19, 1917.
Application iiled March 26,1917. Serial No. 157,395.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that l, MICHAEL Porovioi, :i subject of the King of Hungary, residing at Flint, in the county of Genesee and State of Michigan, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Detachable Heels for Boots and Shoes, of which the following is a specification.
This inventio-n relates'to'certain new and useful improvements in detachable heels for boots and shoes.
The primary object of the invention is the provision of a heel for boots and shoes which may be detached when required but which is maintained in its operative position with sufficient strength to withstand all ordinary wearing strain without being displaced.
A further object of the device is the provision of means whereby different heel treads may be provided for boots and shoes, the foot wear being capable of use with the tread member removed while a suitable tread member is readily locked in position upon the shoe when desired.
With these general objects in view and others that will appear as the nature of the invention is better understood, the same consists in the novel construction, combination and arrangements of parts hereinafter fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawing and pointed out in the appended claims.
In the drawing forming a part of this application and in which like numerals refer to corresponding parts throughout the several views,
Figure 1 is a side elevational view of a portion of a shoe with the heel construction shown in section.
Fig. 2 is a transverse sectional view taken upon line II-II of Fig. 1.
Fig. 3 is a perspective view of the heel tread member detached, and,
Fig. 4 is an inverted perspective view of the heel portion of they shoe with the tread member removed.
It being understood that the device consists of a removable tread portion for the heel of an article for foot wear, the same herein illustrated in connection with a shoe 10 having the usual sole 11 and upper 12, a heel tread member 13 being adapted for detachable connection therewith.
The heel portion 14 of the shoe sole 11.
is provided with a lift or layer 15 preferably formed of leather and being substantially of the shape of the usual horse-shoe or arched formation secured to the sole 11 by fastening nails 16 or other suitable devices and having a forwardly opening cutaway portion 17 arranged with beveledl sideportions 18 adjacent thereto.
A retaining keeper plate 19 is secured within the cut-away portion 17 by means of rivets 20 secured through the sole portionV 14, the central portion 21 of the plate being bent into a channel arrangement providing a receiving opening 22 between the said plate and shoe sole.
The aforementioned tread member 13 may be formed of any desirable material being herein illustrated as made up of four layers 23 of leather. An attaching bracket 24 is mounted upon the upper face 25 of thetread member 13 the same comprising a base 26 secured to the tread member 13 by means of rivets. 27 and having a rearwardly bent integral tongue 28 carried thereby with a down-turned sharpened terminal flange 29, the said tongue being adapted for sliding reception within the socket 22 of the plate 21. A filling strip 30 is carried by the tread member face 25 forwardly of the bracket 24 lying flush with the forward face 31 of the tread member 13 and adapted for fitting within the forward open end of the cutaway portion 17 of the heel lift 15 when the device is operatively assembled.
By grasping ther tread member 13, lthe tongue 18 may be forced through the socket 22 until the flange 29 engages over the rear edge 32 of the plate 19 and at which times the tread section will be in flat seating engagement with the heel lift 15 with the outer edges thereof lying flush therewith and with the forward face of the tread member and filling strip 30 lying substantially flush with the forward ends 33 of the heel lift 15. The tongue 28 is formed of lstiff metal, such as steel possessing sufficient resiliency to allow the assembling of the device but preventing the removal of the tongue 28 from the plate 19 excepting by exerting great force in a pre-determined effort to remove the tread member 13, the latter being operatively retained against being removed under any ordinary wearing conditions. A strong and serviceable heel is provided which may be forcibly removed by the wearer, the usual forward sliding or walking movement of the shoe tending to retain the treadrmember more tightly upon the shoe.
That I claim as new is l. A device of the class described comprising a shoe sole, an arched lift secured to the heel .portion thereof having a forwardly opening side, a keeper plate secured within said lift having a socket therethrough eX- tending longitudinally of the sole, a tread member, and a bracket secured to the upper face of said tread member' provided with a rearwardly projecting locking tongue' having a down-turned terminal flange, the said tongue being positioned through the said socket with its flange overlying the rear end'of the plate when the tread member is operatively arranged upon the said lift.
2. A device of the class described comprising a shoe sole, an arched lift secured to the heel portion thereof having a forwardly opening side, a keeper plate vsecured within said lift having' a socket therethrough eX- tending longitudinally of the sole7 a tread member, a bracket secured to the upper face of said tread member provided with a rearwardly projecting locking tongue having a down-turned terminal flange, the said tongue being positioned through the said socket with its flange overlying the rear end of the plate when the tread member is operatively arranged upon the said lift, the inner edge of said lift being beveled toward the cut-away central portion of the lift, and
a liller strip carried by the upper face of said tread member forwardly of said bracket adapted for reception in the open 'end of the lift when the device is assembled 'forward ends of said lift.
In testimony whereof I aliix my signature.
MICHAEL POPOVICH.
