Specification of Letters Patent. Patented June 19, 1917.
Application filed August 11 1915, Serial No. 45,002. Renewed May 2, 1917. Serial No. 166,051.
To all whom it may concern: I Be it known that I, HARRY E. COLE, a
citizen of the United States, residing at Akron, in the county of Summit, State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful 1 Improvements in Folding Boxes; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full,
clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
The present invention is directed to improvements in folding boxes, and has for its object to provide a blank so constructed that the same can be folded out flat or into a box for packing purposes.
A further object of the invention is to provide a blank for folding boxes, so formed that the parts thereof are integrally connected, and are adapted to be folded flat or into a complete box.
With these and other objects in View, this invention resides in the novel features of construction, formation, combination and arrangement of parts to be hereinafter more fully described, claimed and illustrated in the accompanying drawing, in which Figure 1 is a plan view of the blank,
Fig. 2 is a perspective view of the blank, showing the same partially folded.
Fig. 3 is a perspective view of a box 7 formed from the improved blank.
Fig. 4 is a sectional view on line 4-4 of Fig. 3. I
Referring to the drawing 1 indicates the blank, which is formed from suitable card board and comprises abottom 2, sides'3 and ends 4, it being of course understood that the point of connection between the sides 3 and the bottom 1, and the ends 4 and bottom 1, are scored, as at a and 6, whereby said sides and ends may fold. Carried by the outer edges of the ends 4 are covers 5, each cover having side flaps 6, whereby when the box is in its set up position, said flaps will overlap each other, as will the covers, and at which time said flaps will lie adjacent the sides 3.
Rectangular gussets 7 connect the ends of the sides 3 and adjacent ends of the flaps 6,
the scores a, and the scores 0 formed at the juncture of the ends 4 and covers 5, while the outer ends of said scores stop at the outer corners of the sides 3 and flaps 6. By
.scoring the gussets in the manner above described, a plurality of triangular shaped sections 9 and 10 are provided, whereby when the box is set up the sections 9 will fold inwardly against the sections 10, and at which time the outer faces of said sections contact with each other. When the boxis completely shut up, the inner faces of the sections 9 Will contact, and at which time the inner face of one of the sections 10 engages the adjacent inner faces of the ends 4. In other words, the sections 9 and 10 fold automatically, and in interlocking engagement, so that when the box is set up the sides 3 cannot fold ins wardly.
A string 11 is engaged with the bottom 2, and is adapted to be tied around the box when set up. The box is preferably used for packing clothes, but of course can be used for any other purpose desired.
What is claimed is A folding box comprising a bottom, sides and ends hingedly connected to the bottom, covers similarly connected to the ends, flaps hinged to the sides of the covers, gussets connecting the ends of the sides and adjacent ends of the flaps, said gussets being scored diagonally to provide four equal triangular shaped sections, said sections being adapted to fold one within the other when the covers and flaps are in overlapping relation, and
- the box is in its set-up position.
