Specification of Letters Patent.
'Patented Feb. 11, 1913'.
Application led January 23, 1909. Serial No, 474,948.
To allwhom it may concern Be it known that I, Ronx'irgl?. Bnowiv, a `citizen of the Unit/ed States, residing 1n the city of Philadelphia, county of Philadelphia,and State of Pennsylvania, have :invented certain Improvements in'- Paper Boxes, i My invention is av paper boxmadeof a Vsingle sheet kof, material lhaving integral parts` hinged 'together so that the blank can be brought to 'form readily.
My object is to producea simple, inex-l pensive, strong, eicient and readily assembled construction adapted for holding clothing.
In'the diravvings, 1 isa plan-view fisj a view Yof a partly closed box formed-from said blank Fig- 3 is a perspetive-vievvgof the same box'clos'edg Fig.` 4is seetionfalyiew of anend ofthe box; nig. `5 isadplgn'view-of blank use@ in;
angles to' the bot-tom along the lscore line 5, the rectangular corner sections 6 separated by the through 'cuts 7 from the ends 2'and turnin along the score lines 8 to'positions at rig t angles to the parts 1 and-4, the rectangular side `section'9 turning atright angles to the bottom along the score 'line 10the rectangular sections '11 separated by .the through cuts 12 from the respectiveI parts 2 and turnin Aalong the score lines 13 to positions atright anglesv to the parts 1 and 9, the rectangular top section 14 turning along the score line'1'5 so that Ait can be brought to position at right angles to .the folded part 2 and parallel to `the part 1,
the end sections 16 separated'by the through cuts 17 and turning along the score lines 18 so that they can be brought to position ping the folded end members connectedv with Aat right angles to the part 1 and overlap? the bottom and sides, the side section 19 turning along the crease line 20 so'. that it separated froml the parts 16 the through cuts 22 and turning alongthejscoreglines so that they can be brought within the `folded ends 16. y Ears 24 on the part 19 it `in termed` in the part 4 4Aby the dovetailed cuts 25. VEars 24 may .be-formed on the 4parts 16 and Aslots 25-,formed.in the parts i will overlap the-part 4, andthe parts 21 Athe slots 2, the, ears andslots engaging to holdthe e .parts together. In lieu of or 4in add'tion` to theears, a oord 26 `ma .be used to.k fp the parts in their assemb ed position and the boxclosod.V `v`It will be understood that the end. flaps 6, 1 1 land 21, being disposedyvithin the parts 2 andY between :the parts 1 and. 14, Y -act both t-o close the corners andstiften' the construction so that liability'to Zllufshin'g'v is Y reduced to a minimum. ,TheQlapS'GfaHd 21 being between'the'top audibo'ttomof the box, they exert a lever like action" to hQldthe sides .4andgl'togethen v i Referri 3`ig's. ,5 f` to '8. inclusive, lthe construction here represented Vcomprises 'the' ,.rectangularf bottom 27, the rect-1a ngfulaiside, 2 8 turningto apposition at,right-'afr1'gle's-' toI the hottomxalong the scorregline.. 29, the endg, f sections .3 0 turning on the s`coreglines 31.to
position atright angles tothe folded` sec- -tion 28, the rectangular vside 32 turningfon the score line w33. to' position at right angles to the part 27, the end sections 34 turning on the score lines 35 so as to he' brought to positions at right angles to' the positioned parts 27 and 32, the rectangular top 36 turning on the score'line 37, the side section ,38
of the top turning on the score line 39,l the` end sections 40 of the part 38 turning`on the score lines 41, the end. sections 42 of the part 36-separated from the. parts 34 and 40 by the respective through cuts'44 and 44' and turning onthe score line.43, and the flaps 45 on the parts 42 turning on'.` the score lines 46. In the assembled or folded construction the end sect- ions 30, 34 and 4() lie within the sections 42' and the flaps 45 slip between them and the bottom-to hold. the several parts together; the infolded end [laps 3 0, 34 and 40 closing the corners, stitfening the construction and holtling the sides in place.
'Vith the aps45 resting on the bottom 27 and supporting the flaps 30 and"40` the latter' aps are prevented from springing down whereby the side 28 is held against inward movement and the side 38 against a tendency to spring outward from the side 28.
This second vform of. box may .beiprovidedwith the slots rand .ears shown in -'the' `li rs`t formfor holding'the overlapping sides to-A gether.` It will be understood that` as .the'
depth of ea :h of the several parts 2," 4C, 6,
9, l11, 16, 19 and 21 is'thedepth offtherst'v -ormjoffthe box, and as the parts'2, `4, .6, l1 sind 23v are held vertically,between the bot-V -tom section '1f and thetop section 1,4,1by fas- Viin-d 19 fromjspringinglout, without 'thefuse 15. i
tening. down the ends, these interior' sectionsall act to support. the top of the 4box so that it will not'cjrnshlwhilethe looseA patrts and' 21act as levers'- for preventingfthe' parts 4 of; nails, rivets or' the like.V =And asfthe depth of each of the several parts 28,--30, 32,34, 38, 40 and 42is the ldepth of the second form of thefbox, and :is suehparts-are held ver vtieetlly. in bearing' relation to the top and'v bottom seetions27 and 36 and s'the loose parts 30 and 40' aetasleverstohold - inthe v parts 28 and 38, the wrapperA providesl strongbex without'the vuse of extraneous fasteners, seh :1s/rivets and staples, and` thefexpense incident thereto'.
Having described my lnvention, Il'elim: 1. A knock-down box, formed of .a single sheetfof materiaheomprisnga bottom sec-l tion, :side sections of the same'depth folded on Aseoreswhereby they are, hinged to said bottom sect-ion, 'a top section folding'alon'g Y "a score whereby. it ishingedfto-one' of said Side sections, a iseeo'd side section 'folding` 3.5 i. ping a "side-section laforesaidi-'rid being-ofv the same depth," end v'flaps having the'ilepth along a. score whereby itis hinged toff'said top setion, 'said last named side" section lapof said side'fseetions-.and folding on scores whereby they are'hingedtoA the ends-of the respective iside sect-ions, and end flaps foldning on scores;v whereby they aire/ hinged to ltions, said end flaps onsaid side sections be- .irig' disposed Within `the overlapping flaps of vseid top andbottom sections to. support of the lapping side sections.
