:Application led December 7, 1916. Serial No. 135,696.
To all whom t may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN a subject of the King of Great Britain and Ireland, residing at Huddersfield, in the county of York, England, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Machines like, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to certain improvements in machines or apparatus for the dyeing, washing, or other liquid treatment of wool, rags, shoddy, and the like.
In these processes an apparatus has ordinarily been employed consisting of a vat or receptacle divided into upper and lower compartments by means ofa .perforated plate, and having a central :circulating tube leading from the lower compartment and extending upwardly through the upper compartment to -a poi'nt above the level of the liquid within the'vat, the circulation being set up and maintained (up the central tube and down through the material and perforated plate) by means of steam or compressed air introduced into the lower comartment by way of a supply main and perorated coil. In this known type of apparatus it has also been proposed .to introduce the coloring matter into the vat by way ofa funnelv or like receptacle having a branch pipe connection to the said steam or compressed air supply main. It has also been proposed in another type of apparatus to lift and Iagitate the material within theupper compartment ofthe vat by means of compressed air introduced into the lower compartment by way of a supply main and perforated coil and from thence passed upward through the perforated plate and through the material.
My present invention relates to the aforesaid type ofapparatus having the upper and lower compartments, the intermediate perforated plate, the central circulating tube, and the steam supply main, and my improvement consists mainly in the combination therewith of an auxiliary supply pipe designed to introduce an auxiliary supply of air into the lower compartment and to pass same upward through the perforated plate for the purpose of lifting and agitating the material, said auxiliary air supply being controlled by a steam-operated air injector having-a branch connection from the steam supply main, and said auxiliary air-supply HENRY MILNES,
being utilized either separately or concurrently with the ordinary'steam supply so as to obtain either a single or a double circulation. A further feature of my invention lies in the introduction of the coloring matter by way of a branch connection to the auxiliary air supply pipe.
he accompanying drawing shows an elevation in section of a dye vat of the type referred to and having my 'improvements applied. Y
D is partment E, lower compartment F, intermediate'perforated plate G, central circulatingI tube I, and steam supply main K with valve L.
' According to my invention the steam sup-- ply main K is provided with a branch pipe M having valve J, this branch steam pipe M being operatively connected to an air injector I-I fitted in an auxiliary air supply pipe A, which is carried down through the vat into the lower compartment Fand terminates in a perforated coil B around the bottom of the vat'. The auxiliary air supply pipe A is also fitted with a branch pipe N having a valve O and an ordinary inlet funnel C for the dye liquid or coloring matto the perforated coil B, from whence it 1s forced through the perforated plate G-and up through the material, agitating and lifting the material throughout without the necessity for stanging or poling. The ordinarysteam supply through the main K for the heating circulation, and the auxiliaryv air supply through the branch A for the lifting the ordinary vat, having upper comcirculation, .may be utilized either separately or concurrentlyas desired. The dye liquid or colorin matter is introduced by way of l the inlet nnel'C and branch pipe N, `and is forced down the pipe .A and delivered along with the auxiliary air supply from the perforated coil B, thus insuring eective istribution and thorough mixing with the liquor within4 the vat. v l' I claim 1. In dyeing l the I; vhaving. the ordinary upper apparatus and the like` ol l ,bination therewith k signed to introduce an auxiliary supply of lower compartments, intermediate` perforated plate, central circulating tube, and steam supply main, the employment in comof an auxiliary. pipe deair into the lower compartment and to pass same upward through the perforated platel for the purpose of lifting the material, said auxiliary air supply being controlled by a steam operated air injector having a branch 'connection from` the steam supply main, and said auxiliary airsupply and ordinary steam a ,supplyv being utilizable either separately or forth. l n 2. In dyeing apparatus and the like of `the type having the ordinary 'upper -andconcurrently, substantially as herein set lower compartments, intermediate perforated plate, Hcentral circulating tube, and steammamies -suppl main, the employment in combina-- tion t e erewith of an auxiliary ipe designed to introduce an auxiliary. supp y of air into the lower compartment and to pass same up- Vward through the perforated plate for the purpose of lifting the material, said auxil; iaryair supply being controlled by a steam operated air 1n]ector having a branch coni Witnesses:
