FREDERICK EUGENE DROVN, OF PAIVTUCKET, RIIODE ISLAND.
BLEACHlNG-KEIR.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent N0. 415,191, dated November 19, 1889.
Application tiled March 19,1888. Serial No. 267,707. (No model.)
T0 all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, FREDERICK EUGENE DROWN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Pawtucket, in the county of Providence and State of ,Rhode Island, have invented a new and useful apparatus termed a Bleaching-Keir, for the purpose of bleaching cotton cops, yarns, and fabrics, of which the following is a specification.
It is the object of my invention to bleach cotton cops, yarns, and fabrics in bulk, whereby all portions of the material under treatment may be simultaneously acted upon by the treating-liquors.
By the use of my bleaching-keir the bleaching of cotton cops, yarns, and fabrics can be very thoroughly effected with great economy of time, labor, chemicals, and heat, simplification and chcapness of the apparatus, and reduction of the space required.
In order that my invention may be more readily understood, I proceed to describe the same with reference to the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure l is a vertical section, and Fig. 2 is a horizontal section.
A is a vessel, termed a keir, inclosing a rotating' perforated basket B, fixed t0 a hollow perforated vertical shaft C.
D D2 are the man-holes in keir A.
E is a pipe admitting steam to keir A.
F F2 are pumps which transfer the liquor from bottom of keir A through pipes G G2 ll H2 and the gland I and shaft C into basket B, which contains the cotton cops, yarns, or fabrics to be treated.
J J2 are the pipes admitting liquors into sha-ft C, thence into basket B, thence into keir A.
K is a pulley on which the driving-belt is placed for the purpose of rotating basket B.
L L2 Ls L4 are valves that control the admittance of liquors to keir A.
M M2 are stuffing-boxes in keir A for shaft C.
N N2 are bearings for shaft C.
O O2 are suction-pipes from bottom of keir A to pumps F F2.
P is a vent-pipe in bottom of keir A.
Q is a water-glass on keir A.
R is a safety-Valve on keir A.
Sis a step supporting shaft C.
T is an air-inlet from pressure-blower.
In bleaching I do not confine myself to any one process or particular steps of operation. The cotton cops, yarns, or fabrics are placed in basket B, and the ordinary operations in bleaching them I describe as follows: The treatingliquors are admitted into keir A through pipes J -I-I or J2 H2 and circulated through the material to be bleached in basket B by pumps F or F2, Which transfer the liquor from keir A through pipes G or G2 H or H2 and the shaft C into basket B. I have found that the liquor can be discharged into basket B by means of a stationary pipe arranged to discharge downward into basket B; but I prefer toA use the hollow perforated shaft C. After treatment the liquor can be pumped out through pipes J or J2, or run out through vent-pipe I). Steam is admitted to keir A through pipe E, and air through pipe T.
Ilaving thus described my invention and the manner of operating it in practice,I claim as my invention and desire to secure by Letters Patentl. In an apparatus for bleaching or dyeing, the combination of the vertical stationary steam-tight vessel A, having in its top tightclosing doors D', with a rotating cylinder B, having perforated sides, and a hollow perforated shaft C, having steam-tight joints with vessel A, substantially as described.
2. In an apparatus for bleaching ordyeing, the combination of the vertical stationary steam-tight Vessel A, the interior rotating cylinder B, having perforated sides, and the hollow perforated shaft C, and the pumps F, having pipes connecting with vessel A and shaft G, substantially as described.
3. In an apparatus for bleaching or dyeing, the combination of the vertical stationary steam-tight vessel A, having in its top tightclosing doors D', and steam-pipe E and ventpipe P, with a rotating cylinder B, having' perforated sides, and a hollow perforated shaft C, having steam-tight joints with vessel A, substantially as described.
