UNITED STATES MILTON C. J. BILLINGHAM, OF KALAMAZOO, MICHIGAN.
'IPAPER-STOCK-TREATING MACHINE.
Specification of Letters Patent. Patented June 20, 1922.
Application filed September 1, 1920. Serial No. 407,468.
To all whom may concern Be it known that I, MILTON C. J. BILL- INGHAM, a citizen of the United States. re-
sidin at Kalamazoo, county of Kalamazoo, x tate -of Mlchlgan, have invented ceraction.
Second, to provide an improved disintegrating or defibering machine well adapted for the treatment of printed papers and deinking the same and preparing the same for paper stock which produces a superior product.
Further objects and objects relating to structural details will definitely appear from the detailed description to follow.
I accomplish the objects of my invention by the devices and means described in the following specification. The invention is clearly defined and pointed out in the claims.
A structure which is a preferred embodiment of my invention is clearly illustrated in the accompanying drawing forming a part of this specification, in which:
Fig. I is a detail View partially in vertical central section of a stock treating machine or apparatus embodying the features of my invention.
Fig. II is an inverted view of the perforated disintegrating plate.
In the accompanying drawing, I have not attempted to illustrate or maintain the proper relative proportions of parts as these will be varied to suit the capacity and the particular conditions-of installation of the machines andI also show various parts in conventional form.
In the embodiment illustrated I provide a cylindrical tank 1 disposed vertically and hole 4 therein. This manhole is provided with a cover 5, the attaching means for the cover being shown conventionally at.6.
The tank has a central discharge indicated by dotted lines at 7. The discharge pipe 8 of the tank is connected to the inlet 9 of the pump 10. The supply connection 11 is provided for the stock to be treated. This connection is controlled by the valve 12, the pipe 8 being provided with a valve 13.
v The pump discharge 14 is provided with a discharge connection 15 for the treated stock controlled by the valve 16, and with a discharge pipe 17 disposed centrally through the openings 7 in the tank and having a nozzle 18 at its upper end delivering near the top of the tank and centrally thereof.
A foraminated concave plate 19 is supported above the nozzle so that the stream from the nozzle strikes the plate. The plate 19 is suspended from the manhole cover 5 by means of the hangers 20. The holes 21 in the plate 19 are preferably-tapered as illustrated.
The pump is driven from an electric motor indicated at 22.
With the parts thus arranged the stock to be disintegrated is delivered from the nozzle 18 against the plate 19 and is driven through the holes in the plate so that the fibers are pulled apart and separated, the stock being circulated as long as may be desired.
My improved disintegrating or defibering machine is not likely to clog as any pieces of string or the like which strike the plate fall back into the tank and further the stream impinges against the plate forcibly driving the stock through it keeping the openings comparatively free. The upper walls of the tank are curved so that the stock is deflected downwardly within the tank around the walls and this'insures a complete circulation of the stock which is of importance as should a portion fail to circulate for a time and then become lodged, the stock is not uniformly disintegrated and is not suitable for the purposes intended.
My improved machine is especially well located manhole therein, a cover for said manhole, a pump having its intake connected to said tank discharge, a discharge pipe for said pump disposed through sald discharge opening centrally and vertically of said tank and provided with a discharge nozzle positioned at the upper end of the tank, and a horizontally disposedconcave foraminated plate suspended from said manhole cover above said nozzle to receive the stream therefrom. 4
I 2. In a stocktreating machine,- the combination ofa vertically disposed cylindrical tank having an internally concave bottom with a central discharge opening 't-herein, a
pump having its intake connected to said tank discharge, a discharge pipe for said pump disposed through said discharge opening centrally and vertically of said tank and provided with a discharge nozzle positioned at the upperend of the tank, and a horizontally disposed concave foraminated plate disposed above .said nozzle to receive the stream therefrom. 3. In a stock treating machine, the combination of a tank having a discharge at the bottom, a pump having its intake connected to said discharge, a discharge pipe for said pump disposed vertically of said tank through said discharge opening, and a horizontally disposed foraminated'member disposed above and in a spaced relation to the end of said discharge pipe to receive the stream therefrom.
4. In a stock treating ,machine, the combination of a tank having a discharge at the bottom, a circulating pump, a dischargepipe for said pump delivering Within said tank, and. a foramina-ted member disposed in alignment .with the stream delivered by the pump, all coacting for the purpose specified.
5. In a stock treating machine, the combination of a tank, a stock circulating pump connected to the bottom of the tank and pro-. vided wlth a discharge nozzle within said "tank, and a concave foraminated plate disposed transversely of said nozzle to receive the stream therefrom. 6. In a stock treating machine, the combination of a tank, a stock circulating pump connected to the bottom of the tank andprovided with a discharge within said tank, a
and a foraminated member'disposed to receive the stream from said'discharge.
In' witness whereof, I have hereunto set my hand and seal in the presence of a witness.
, MILTON c. J. lalumcnam. [a 8.]
