FASTENING DEVICE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented June 12, 1917.

To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, Crnxrnns J. PEMBROKE, of Rochester, in the county of Monroe and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Fastening Devices; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying'drawings', forming a part of this specification, and to the reference-numerals marked thereon.
My invention relates to fastening devices for doors and the like, and it has for its object to provide a construction that may be applied readily to doors of automobiles, and can be manufactured at a reasonable cost. A further object is to provide a simple construction that permits a door to be opened and closed easily, and also serves to hold it rigidly when closed in a manner that effectually prevents rattling or loosening of the door in the frame. Furthermore, the invention contemplates fastening the doors so rigidly as to reinforce the body when the doors are closed, thus effectually obviating any sagging or springing of the metal body. The doors when fastened act after the manner of tie rods, maintaining the body rigid, which prevents cracking of paint or distor tion of the metal such as occurs with a body that is not properly supported, and results from springing the metal when traveling over rough places. To these and other ends the invention consists in certain improve ments and combinations of parts all as will be hereinafter more fully described, the novel features being pointed out in the claims at the end of the specification.

Similar reference characters in the several figures indicate the same parts.
The invention is susceptible of various applications requiring a locking means for holding a closure in engagement with a frame or support, and is not necessarily confined to the particular arrangement that will be hereinafter described where the closure consists of a door such as generally employed in motor vehicle constructions. Obviously, the invention has special advantages in the application last mentioned because of the unusual amount of jarring or rattling to which such a door is subjected, and all of which is overcome with the present arrangement. In the embodiment shown, A designates a stationary frame, which may be the body of a vehicle, while B is a closure or door.
The frame and closure are provided with cooperating socket and centering members, the centering member being arranged to enter the socket member when the door is closed, so as toguide it in its closing movement and to insure its being always brought to proper position with relation to the frame on closing. Preferably, the socket member is carried by the closure while the centering member is arranged on the frame, although this method need not necessarily be followed, and in the present arrangement I have shown a plate a adapted to be secured to the stationary frame in the manner shown in Fig. 2. Mounted on the closure or door is the casting Z), which includes a pair of surfaces arranged at an obtuse angle to each other, and may be attached in the manner shown in Fig. 2. The casting o embodies a socket member I) which affords a tapered socket 5 adapted to receive the tapered centering member a when the dooris closed, as shown in Fig. 3. This arrangement enables the door to close readily, and in a manner that insures its proper location in truerelation to the frame when closed, as the centering member must always reach the center of the socket member before the door can be locked. The casting Z) and the socket member are provided with an opening 6 adapted to be brought in alinement with recess a for a purpose that Will appear presently. J ournaled in the casting b is a spindle b fixed upon which is the locking lever 6 Also mounted on the spindle b is the cam b having a cam surface b extending in a direction transversely of the aXis of the spindle 5 The cam 6 projects through the opening 6 and into the recessa of the centering member when the locking lever 72 is operated, While the cam surface 6" engages the shoulder b on the centering device, causing the latter to be gradually forced to the limit of its movement in the socket 6 This serves to retain the closure in intimate engagement with the frame, While the close engagement between the socket member and the centering member prevents jarring orloosening of the door. The parts are so related that the locking cam is held in looking position by its frictional engagement, and at the same time it can be released with little difficulty to open the door.
The construction described is simple in its arrangement and can be manufactured at a cost that permits its practical application for various uses, and it affords a fastening device that is simple in operation and eX- tremely effective in retaining a closure in rigid relation to its frame.
I claim as my invention:
1. In a fastening device, the combination With a stationary frame and a movable clo sure, of a socket member mounted on the closure having a tapered circular socket, a tapered circular centering member carried by the frame and arranged to enter said socket, a locking lever mounted on the 010- sure, the centering member having a recess therein forming a shoulder andthe socket member being provided with an opening adapted to be alined With said recess, and a cam on the closure connected to said lever and operable through said opening to engage the shoulder on the centering member and effect a wedging action thereagainst.
2. In a fastening device, the combination with a stationary frame and a movable closure, of a tapered circular socket member on one of said parts, a. tapered circular centering member on the other of said parts and arranged to enter the socket member, a shoulder formed on one of said members, a locking lever mounted on the closure, and a cam operated by said lever and having engagement with the shoulder to hold the closure against movement.
3. In a fastening device, the combination with a stationary frame and a movable closure, of a socket member mounted on the closure having a tapered socket of substantially circular cross section throughout, a tapered pin of substantially circular cross section throughout carried by the frame and arranged to enter said socket, thetapered pin having a recess at one side forming a shoulder and the socket member having an opening adapted to coincide With saidrecess, and locking means arranged on the closure and including a spindle having a handle at one end and a cam at its opposite end which is operable through said opening to engage the shoulder on the pin and'efiect a Wedging action to force the tapered pin into the tapered circular socket.
